KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced new MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week for week eight of the 2026 spring season, presented by
ClassicCourt – the official tennis surface of the MIAA. Washburn’s Tommy Cecchetti claimed Washburn’s third straight Athlete of the Week honor in the North Division, while Southern Arkansas’s Jonas Sommer was named the South Division’s Athlete of the Week for the third consecutive week.
NORTH DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tommy Cecchetti, Washburn
Tommy Cecchetti helped the Ichabods to a 2-0 week with road wins over two ranked, MIAA/GAC South Division opponents. The junior from Milano, Italy, went 4-0 on the week in singles and doubles play. He and Pavlos Parson went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, including a 6-0 win over No. 11-ranked Moritz Buss and Aaron Osmond in Washurn’s 5-2 win over No. 29-ranked Ouachita. He also won a pair of two-set singles matches over the Tigers and Muleriders, playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Ichabods swept No. 47 Southern Arkansas 4-0. This is Cecchetti’s first MIAA/GAC Athlete of the Week award this season. The Ichabdos’ have claimed the last three North Division Athlete of the Week honors and have earned four overall in the 2026 season.
SOUTH DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jonas Sommer, Southern Arkansas
Jonas Sommer has been named the MIAA/GAC Athlete of the Week in the South Division for the third straight week. He led the Muleriders through four matches last week, as Southern Arkansas finished 2-2 with wins over Meridian CC (7-0) and Montevallo (5-2), and losses against ranked opponents, No. 5 Washburn and No. 31 West Alabama. In the four matches, Sommer collected two singles victories and had four matches go unfinished. He was the only Mulerider to win in SAU’s 6-1 loss to No. 31-ranked Montevallo, winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at No. 5 singles.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Pavlo Vysotin, Northwest Missouri [NORTH DIVISION]
Pavlo Vysotin went 3-0 in singles play last week, including a 7-5, 6-4 win over Drake University's Alan Gonzalez on Tuesday. Vysotin tallied singles wins over McKendree's Ignacio Paolini (2-6, 6-4, 7-5) at No. 1 singles, a straight-sets triumph over Missouri-St. Louis’s Percy Siercke (7-5, 7-6). The sophomore from Ukraine closed the week with a Division I victory over Drake's Gonzalez at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-4. Vyostin’s only doubles victory of the week was against Drake when he and Gage Foltz notched a 7-6 (13-11) tiebreaker win over Drake's Adan Tarquino and Max Goldemberg at No. 3 doubles.
