KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced new MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week for week two of the 2026 season, presented by
ClassicCourt – the official tennis surface of the MIAA. Washburn's Kilian Martinez was named the North Division Athlete of the Week and Northeastern State's James Edley was selected as the South Division Athlete of the Week.
NORTH DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kilian Martinez, Washburn
Kilian Martinez led the No. 6-ranked Ichabods at the ITA National Indoor Championship in Indianapolis this past weekend, where Washburn faced three consecutive opponents ranked within Division II’s top five. Martinez was a perfect 3-0 in singles competition. The freshman from Switzerland defeated two ranked opponents playing at the No.3 position. In Washburn's 4-3 win over No. 5 Lubbock Christian, Martinez defeated No. 26-ranked Mattie Ghedin 7-6(2), 4-6, 7-5. He won in two sets over Barry's No. 11-ranked Adamy Lynch, 6-3 and 6-4, giving the Ichabods their only point in the match against the top-ranked team in Division II. Martinez was once again Washburn’s only point scorer against No. 3 Flager, winning 6-3 and 7-5 over Filip Kana. In doubles action, Martinez and Tommy Cecchetti went 0-3 on the week, playing at the No.1 position against Division II’s top-ranked duos.
SOUTH DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: James Edley, Northeastern State
James Edley went undefeated at 4-0 last week as the RiverHawks captured their first wins as a revived NCAA Division II program. In Northeastern State’s 6-1 win over UT-Dallas, the sophomore from South Africa earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No.1 singles and won 6-1 at No.3 doubles with Luis Denda. In the 4-3 win over UT Permian Basin, Edley earned his second win of the day at No.1 singles, winning 7-5, 6-3 before he and Denda earned a 6-4 victory at No.2 doubles
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Hugo Alvarez Gonzalez, Northwest Missouri [NORTH DIVISION]
Hugo Alvarez Gonzalez collected a doubles win and singles win to push Northwest to a 4-3 non-conference dual win over Colorado Mesa. Gonzalez and Bernardo Henriques scored a 6-4 win at No.3 doubles to give the Beracats the doubles point against the Mavericks. The sophomore from Spain also clinched the dual victory with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over CMU's Gavin Hutter at No.5 singles.
Ramon Strassmann, Ouachita [SOUTH DIVISION]
Ramon Strassmann helped Ouachita to a 4-1 win against Southwest Baptist in Edmond, Okla., last Saturday (Feb. 14). The senior from Switzerland was undefeated with a 6-3 win at No.1 doubles with teammate Yarin Aebi, followed by a 6-0, 6-1 win at No.1 singles over SBU's Bojan Radoman.
Diego Calvo, Emporia State [NORTH DIVISION]
Diego Calvo won both his singles matches and finished 1-1 in doubles in Emporia State’s road matches over the weekend. Calvo only dropped two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No.3 singles against William Jewell, then took a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No.4 singles against Rockhurst. The junior from Italy also teamed with Anton Sarunic to post a 6-5 victory at No.1 doubles against Jewell before falling in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) to Rockhurst’s No.1 doubles pair.
