Joplin, Mo. – Pittsburg State scored 170 points as a team to earn the MIAA Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship with Southwest Baptist finishing second and host Missouri Southern finishing in third. On the men’s side Pittsburg State edged Lincoln by two and half points to claim the MIAA title with Missouri Southern coming in third.
Pittsburg State’s Emilyn Dearman won the high point award for the women behind the strength of three MIAA titles on Sunday. For the men it was Pittsburg State’s Louis Rollins as he won a title and earned a second place finish on Sunday.
Things got going on Friday afternoon as Katie Cassidy of Central Missouri earned the MIAA championship with 3,789 points in the pentathlon. Allie Heckmeyer of Missouri Southern finished second with Emporia State’s Monica Howard placing third.
The first men’s championship was awarded on Saturday as Tanner McNutt of Pittsburg State earned 5,237 points to win the heptathlon. Devin Cornelius of Central Missouri earned second place with Pittsburg State’s Mitchell Hodson finishing in third.
The field events were up next on Saturday as Lincoln’s Sedeekie Edie jumped 50’ 4.75” to win the MIAA championship. Kennan Harrison of Missouri Southern earned second and Washburn’s Kevin Norville was also All-MIAA in third place. In the women’s event Lincoln’s Diana Cauldwell defended her 2016 championship with a jump of 40’ 10.5” to stand a top the podium. Kendra Smith of Lindenwood finished second in the event and Allie Heckmeyer of Missouri Southern was third.
Michelle Kyle of LIndenwood won the women’s weight throw finishing with a toss of 60’ 3.25” to win by two feet. Mariah Garcia of Central Oklahoma finished in second and Pittsburg State’s Jasmine Smith came in third. In the men’s event Bryan Burns of Missouri Southern earned the title on home turf as he finished with a 62’ 11.5” throw. Nathan Libby of Central Missouri came in second and Junior Joseph of Missouri Southern finished in third.
In the men’s pole vault Cole Phillips cleared 17’ 7” to set a new MIAA record, besting the previous record of Andrei Skvortsov of Central Missouri which was set in 1999. Morgan Hold of Missouri Southern earned All-MIAA honors by placing second and Bailey Staplman of Nebraska-Kearney also tied for the second spot. It was a record setting performance for the women as well as Emily Presley cleared 13’ 5” to break a seven-year old record and win the championship. Brittany Kallenberger of Central Missouri was second with Pittsburg State’s Alyssa McCarthick finishing third.
Things got going on the track on Saturday night as Katherine Sitzes of Southwest Baptist set a meet record with a time of 17:35.82 besting a record from 2010. Morgan Benesch of Nebraska-Kearney came in second with Fort Hays State’s Micki Krezesinski finishing third. In the men’s race Missouri Southern’s Vincent Kiprop broke his own meet record finishing in 14:20.21 for the MIAA title. Jacob Klemz of Washburn came in second with Brandon Phipps of Northwest Missouri coming in third.
The first relay close out Saturday night as Pittsburg State finished in 12:14.51 to earn the MIAA title in the distance medley relay. Southwest Baptist finished in second with the team from Central Missouri coming in third. In the men’s race Northwest Missouri turned in a time of 10:10.25 to claim the league crown. Lindenwood finished second overall and Nebraska-Kearney placed third in the race.
Things got going on Sunday in the field of Louis Rollins of Pittsburg State jumped 24’ 4.5” to earn the championship in the men’s long jump. Sedeekie Edie of Lincoln finished second and Orneldo Thomas of Lincoln was third. In the women’s event Emilyn Dearman jumped 19’ 4” to earn the title. Katie Cassidy of Central Missouri came in second with Lincoln’s Diana Cauldwell finishing third.
In the women’s shot put Jasmine Smith of Pittsburg State threw 51’ 6.25 inches to automatically qualify for the national meet and take the league crown. Her teammate Jena Black finished second with Emporia State’s Morgan Gilliland coming in third. In the men’s event Derek McKnight of Pittsburg State threw 58’ 5.75” to claim the MIAA title. Missouri Southern’s Bryan Burns was All-MIAA with a second place finish and Jacob Mahin of Central Missouri was third.
In the women’s high jump Natalie O’Keefe of Southwest Baptist finished a top the podium with an automatic qualifying mark of 5’ 10.75” nearly breaking the meet record. Emilee Iverson of Pittsburg State earned second place with Nebraska-Kearney’s Emily Everitt coming in third. In the men’s event Missouri Southern’s Cody Vogt cleared 6’ 9.50” to earn the title. Fort Hays State’s Kolt Newell finished second with Lindenwood’s Akintunde Akinyemi finishing in third.
Things then moved to the track as Missouri Southern’s Emily Harris turned in a time of 5:03.86 to win the mile run. Sheridan Snyder of Central Oklahoma finished second with Katherine Sitzes of Southwest Baptist finishing third. In the men’s race Cole Wellnitz was just .14 second off a record pace as he finished in 4:08.67 to win the mile. Vincent Kiprop of Missouri Southern added to his weekend with a second place finish and Northwest Missouri’s Ryan Cox was third.
In the women’s 60 meter hurdles Emily Dearman got her second title of the day racing to a 8.35 pace. Courtney Nelson her teammate finished second with Morgan Smith of Missouri Southern finishing third. In the men’s race Lincoln’s Darran Hunter finished in 8.27 to earn the league championship. Louis Rollins of Pittsburg State finished in second with his teammate Justice Burks coming in third.
As the hurdles came off the track the length was the same with Pittsburg State’s Imani Hutchinson winning the league title in the women’s 60 meter dash. Kelsey Lewis, her teammate, earned second place with Lincoln’s Kimberly Bailey coming in third. In the men’s race Stephen Rose of Lincoln turned in a 6.80 to earn the league title. Roberto Smith also of Lincoln finished second with Pittsburg State’s Cameron Dawkins coming third.
In the women’s 400 meter dash it came down to one two hundredths of a second as Mery Berman of Southwest Baptist won with a 55.743. Kissi-Ann Brown of Lincoln finished in 55.745 to claim second place with Courtney Nelson of Pittsburg State coming in third. In the men’s race Faedian Royes of Lincoln stood a top the podium with a 48.57 finish. Osvaldo Granillo of Central Missouri finished in second with Lincoln’s Miguel Barton coming in third.
In the women’s 600-yard run Emilyn Dearman picked up her third championship of the day with a 1:24.63 finish. Shanice Clarke of Lincoln came in second with Emporia State’s Elizabeth Blevins coming in third. In the men’s race Decano Cronin of Fort Hays State finished in 1:12.03 to earn the title. Kevon Robertson of Lincoln coming in second with Jacob Randle of Central Missouri finishing in third.
In the 800 meter run Kailey Fuchs finished in 2:18.02 to earn the MIAA championship. Sarah Jewett of Pittsburg State finished in second place with Mary Carr of Southwest Baptist coming in third. In the men’s race Thomas LaRoche of Emporia State turned in a 1:53.68 to earn the league championship. Brett Meyer of Fort Hays State was second with Washburn’s Kelvin Keter finishing third.
In the 200 meter dash Imani Hutchinson of Pittsburg State won her second title finishing at a 25.06 pace. Mary Berman of Southwest Baptist finished in second with Kimberly Bailey of Lincoln coming in third. In the men’s race Dillando Allotey turned in a 21.70 to earn the MIAA title. Lincoln’s Miguel Barton finished second with his teammate Roger Blake finishing third.
In the women’s 3,000 meter run Sierra Wells of Missouri Southern turned in a 10:34.75 to claim the MIAA title. Nicole Svendsen of Central Missouri came in second with Fort Hays State’s Yessenia Gonzales finishing third. In the men’s race Missouri Southern’s Nickson Kiptoo turned in an 8:43.19 to earn the MIAA title. Brian Newkirk of Emporia State finished second with Jacob Burch of Southwest Baptist finishing in third.
In the final women’s event of the day Fort Hays State finished the 4x400 meter relay in 3:59.69 to earn the title. Missouri Southern came in second with Nebraska-Kearney finishing third in the relay. In the men’s relay Lincoln turned in a 3:17.90 which set a building record to claim the MIAA title. Central Missouri finished second with Emporia State earning the third place slot.
