Kansas City, Mo. -- The MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held on February 24-26, 2017 at the Mercy Indoor Track in Joplin, Mo. Lincoln is the reigning champion in both men’s and women’s track and field with victories last season. Last year’s high point winner for the men was Jayce Thomas of Missouri Southern and for the women Chloe Wichmann of Northwest Missouri won the award.
Pentathlon - The one day event will get underway for the women on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. Emilyn Dearman of Pittsburg State enters the weekend automatically qualified for the national meet with the second best mark in the country scoring 3,921 points at the Boo Rogers Combined. Just behind her nationally is Central Missouri’s Katie Cassidy who sits fourth with a 3,840 scored at the Happy Holidays Combined. Emporia State’s Monica Howard is 12th in the nation with a 3,637 at the MSSU Lion Invite.
Heptathlon - The two day event for the men is scheduled to get underway for the men on Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m. Pittsburg State’s Tanner McNutt boasts the nation’s top score as he finished with 5,443 points at the Boo Rogers Combined. Devin Cornelius of Central Missouri finished with 5,121 points at the Happy Holiday’s Combined Events which is eighth in the nation. Bevan Wemhoff has the league’s third best mark with a 4,919 at the UNK Indoor Invite.
In the Field
Shot Put - The MIAA men’s shot put is scheduled to get underway on February 28th at around 11 a.m. Garrett Appier of Pittsburg State has the best throw in the country at 64’ 1.75” at the Crimson and Gold Invite. Jacob Mahin of Central Missouri has the 11th best throw in the nation at 56’ 8.75” Indoor Gorilla Classic while Pittsburg State’s Bo Farrow is 15th in the country at 56’ 1.75” at the Nebraska Tune-Up.
The women’s shot put will be contested around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 28th. The current leader coming into the weekend is Jena Black of Pittsburg State who has the nation’s third best throw at 51’ 0.75” at the MSSU Lion Invite. Right behind her at the #4 spot in the country is teammate Cassie Casswell who threw 50’ 8.75” at the Nebraska Tune-Up. One spot behind her in fifth in Central Missouri’s Heavin Warner who had a throw of 50’ 1.75” at the UCM Invite as entering the weekend four of the nation’s top ten throws have taken place in the MIAA.
Weight Throw - In the women’s weight throw, which is slated for a 1:30 p.m. on February 25th, Lindenwood’s Michelle Kyle posts the nation’s 13th best throw with a mark of 61’ 3.5” at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge. Mariah Garcia of Central Oklahoma sits just behind in the national rankings in the 18th spot with a throw of 59’ 7” at the Gorilla Indoor Classic. Brianna Cooks of Pittsburg State has the leagues third best mark with a toss of 58’ 4: at the Nebraska Tune-Up.
In the men’s weight throw, which will get underway at 3:30 p.m. on February 25th, the nation’s eight best thrower will be competing as Junior Joseph of Missouri Southern threw 64’ 7” at the Lion Invitational. Ben Hanson of Central Missouri has the 11th best mark in the country with a throw of 63’ 5” at the very same meet. Finally Missouri Southern’s Bryan Burns enters the weekend with the 13th best mark in the country using a throw of 62’ 7.75” when he was in the same field as the other two.
Triple Jump - The men’s triple jump is scheduled to go off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25th. Sedeekie Edie has the seventh best mark in the country with a jump of 50’ 6.75” at the Crimson and Gold Invitational. Kennan Harrison of Missouri Southern has the league’s second best mark as he jumped 49’ 0.25” at the MSSU Lion Invitational. Owen Smith, also of Lincoln, will enter the week with the third best mark after leaping 48’ 2.5” at the Missouri Invitational.
The women’s triple jump, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on February 25th, is led by Lincoln’s Diana Cauldwell who has the fourth best jump in the country after going 40’ 8.25” at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic. Lindenwood’s Kendra Smith sports the ninth best mark in the country as she jumped 40’ 0.5” at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge. Amira Jenkins of Pittsburg State will enter the weekend third in the league after she jumped 39’ 0.5” at the Nebraska Tune-Up.
Pole Vault - The men’s pole vault is scheduled to begin around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25th. Central Missouri’s Cole Phillips has automatically qualified for the national meet with a vault of 17’ 7” at the UCM Mule Relays. Kai Miller of Pittsburg State joins him in the nation’s top ten with the seventh best mark at 16’ 8.75” at the same contest. Missouri Southern’s Morgan Hold is one spot behind him nationally with a vault of 16’ 7.25” at the MSSU Lion Invitational.
In the women’s pole vault the event in scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m. on Sunday, February 26th. Missouri Southern’s Emily Presley has the nation’s top mark which qualifies her for the national meet as she vaulted 14’ at the Pittsburg State Invitational. Not far behind her with the third best jump in the country is Central Missouri’s Brittany Kallenberger who vaulted 13’ 1.75” at the Indoor Gorilla Classic. Pittsburg State’s Heather Glenn is also in the top ten nationally in the number nine slot with a vault of 12’ 6.25” at the Crimson and Gold Invite.
High Jump - In the women’s high jump, which is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start on Feb. 26, Natalie O’Keefe of Southwest Baptist cleared 5’ 8.5” at the UCM Invitational which is currently the third best mark in the country. Central Missouri’s Katie Cassidy cleared 5’ 7.75” which is the fifth best mark in the country as part of her competition in a pentathlon. She is tied in that fifth spot with Emilyn Dearman of Pittsburg State who cleared the same mark at the UCM Mule Relays.
The men’s high jump is schedule to get underway around 12 p.m. on Sunday, February 26th. Ian Duncan of Pittsburg State enters the weekend with the best mark clearing 6’ 9.75” at the MSSU Invite. Fort Hays State’s Kolt Newell cleared 6’9.5” at the PSU Invite to come in second. Akintunde Akinyemi cleared the same mark at the Gorilla Indoor Classic to enter the weekend third in the league.
Long Jump - The men’s long jump is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 26. Entering the weekend Sedeekie Edie has a jump of 24’ 9.75” which is fourth in the nation at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic. Pittsburg State’s Louis Rollins enters the weekend with the eight best mark in the country at 24’ 5.75” which he complete at his home meet. Lincoln’s Orneldo Thomas enters the weekend third in the league with a jump of 24’ 1” at the Missouri Invitational.
In the women’s long jump, which is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start on Feb. 26, Diana Cauldwell of Lincoln has the country’s 11th best mark jumping 19’ 4.75” at the Hoosier Hills. PSU’s Emily Dearman has the 19th best jump in the land at 19’ 1.5” at her home meet. Jazmine Williams of Emporia State will enter the weekend third with a mark of 18’ 10” at the Gorilla Indoor Classic.
On the Track
5,000m- The women’s 5000m is scheduled for start on the track at 7.25 p.m. on February 25th. Morgan Benesch of Nebraska-Kearney turned in a 17:06.84 at the Husker Invite to enter the weekend with the league’s top time. Micki Krzesinski of FHSU finished in 17:20.02 at the same meet. Third in the league is SBU’s Katherine Sitzes who turne din a 17:35.82 at the Pittsburg State Invite.
The finals in the men’s 5000m is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. start on February 25th. Vincent Kiprop of Missouri Southern is nationally qualified with the country’s best time when he ran a 13:53.94 at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Brandon Phipps of Northwest Missouri enters the weekend with the second best time in the league finishing in 14:38.46 at the Husker Invite. Jacob Klemz of Washburn will enter the weekend third after finishing in 14:47.31 at the Crimson and Gold Invite.
Distance Medley Relay - The women’s distance medley relay is scheduled for an 8:10 p.m. start on February 25th. Southwest Baptist enters the weekend with the top time in the MIAA turning in an 11:46.97 at GVSU. Pittsburg State will be second with a 12:00.77 at the Gorilla Indoor Classic while FHSU comes in third with a 12:49.98 at the PSU Invite.
The men’s distance medley relay is scheduled for an 8:25 p.m. start on Saturday, February 25th. Missouri Southern has the league’s fastest time running a 9:55.93 at the MSSU Invite. Lindenwood enters the weekend second with a 10:03.15 at the Indoor Gorilla Classic and Nebraska-Kearney sits third with a 10:09.50 at the SDSU Indoor Classic.
Mile - The women’s mile run is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on February 26. Morgan Benesch of Nebraska-Kearney enters the weekend with the fastest time finishing in 4:58.21 at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Emily Harris of Missouri Southern boasts the league’s second fastest time at 4:59.72 which she earned at the Gorilla Indoor Classic. Coming in the league championship third is Katherine Sitzes of Southwest Baptist who turned in a 5:04.73 at the UCM Invite.
The men’s mile run is scheduled for a 2:15 p.m. start on February 26. Cole Wellnitz of Nebraska-Kearney ran a 4:06.49 at the Nebraska Tune-Up for the league’s best time. Ryan Cox of Northwest Missouri finished in 4:10.55 at the Concordia Classic for the second fastest time. Omar Es Salmouny of Lindenwood will come in third after running a 4:10.99 at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge.
60H - The women’s 60m hurdles final is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. on Sunday, February 26. Emilyn Dearman of Pittsburg State has the nation’s fifth best time turning in a 8.55 at the Indoor Gorilla Classic. Courtney Nelson, her teammate, is 15th in the country with an 8.61 at the Crimson and Gold Invitational. Tied with her time is Central Missouri’s Alliah McClendon who earns the pace at the Gorilla Indoor Classic.
The men’s 60m hurdles final is schedule to start off at 2:40 p.m. on the track on February 26. Darran Hunter of LIncoln has the 11th fastest time in the nation turning in an 8.01 at the UCM Classic. Justice Burks of Pittsburg State has the league’s second fastest time with an 8.10 at the Crimson and Gold Invite. Savion Cauveren also of PSU turned in an 8.28 at the Pittsburg State Invite to come into the weekend third.
60m - The women’s 60m final is scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. start on the track on February 26. Sharolyn Joseph Hamblet has the fifth best time in the country coming into the weekend after she turned in a 7.48 at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic. Pittsburg State’s Imani Hutchinson is 11th in the nation after running a 7.53 at the Gorilla Indoor Classic. Kimberly Bailey, also of LIncoln, turned in a 7.56 at the same race as her teammate to have the third best time coming in.
The men’s 60m final is scheduled to start on the track at 2:50 p.m. on February 26. Duke Tibbs of Emporia State has the league’s fastest time after finishing in 6.82 at the Wichita State Shocker Prelude. Roberto Smith of LIncoln turned in a 6.85 at the UCM Classic which ties him with teammate Stephen Rose and Pittsburg State’s Elijah McGill for the MIAA’s second fastest time.
400m -The women’s 400m race is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on Sunday, February 26. Mary Bergman of Southwest Baptist posted the 13th fastest time in the country when she turned in a 55.74 at the UCM Mule Relays. Courtney Nelson of Pittsburg State has the league’s second fastest time with a 56.07 finish at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Kissi-Ann Brown of Lincoln turned in a 56.43 at the Crimson and Gold Invitational which is the MIAA’s third fastest time.
The men’s 400m race is scheduled for a 3:10 p.m. start on February 26. Taysean Goodwin of Emporia State has the nation’s 12th fastest time as he turned in a 47.79 at the Jayhawk Classic. Lincoln’s Faedian Royes is one spot behind him finishing in 47.80 at the Pittsburg State Invite. Duke Tibbs, also of Emporia State, enters the weekend with the league’s third fast time after running the race in 48.00 at the Jayhawk Classic.
600 yard - The women’s 600 yard race is scheduled to fire off at 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, February 286. Kailey Fuchs of Central Missouri boasts the league’s fastest time after she finished in 1:22.43 at the UCM Classic. Pittsburg State’s Emilyn Dearman finished the race in 1:24.38 at the Mule Relays and Lincoln’s Kissi-Ann Brown turned in a 1:25.19 at the PSU Invite.
The men’s 600 yard is slated for a 3:25 p.m. start on Sunday, February 26. Fort Hays State’s Decano Cronin enters the weekend with the fastest time, finishing in 1:10.80 at the Husker Invitational. Luke Stenzel of Emporia State turned in a 1:11.29 at the same race and his teammate Thomas LaRoche finished in 1;11.85 at the UCM Invite.
800m - The MIAA women’s 800m run is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the final day of the conference meet. Central Missouri’s Kaiey Fuchs sports the nation’s fifth fastest time at 2:09.58 which she turned in at the UCM Mule Relays. Mary Carr of Southwest Baptist will enter with the second fastest time in the league as she finished in 2:13.66 at the same meet. Lincoln’s Danielle James turned in a 2:15.76 at the PSU Invitational which will enter the weekend third.
The men’s 800m run final is scheduled for a 3:35 p.m. on Sunday, February 26. Decano Cronin of Fort Hays State has the nation’s second fastest time and is automatically qualified for the national meet after turning in a 1:48.72 at the Concordia Indoor Invite. His teammate Brett Meyer is also automatically qualified with the nation’s third fastest time a 1:48.89 at the Concordia Indoor Invite. Emporia State’s Thomas LaRoche has the nation’s seventh fastest time turning in a 1:50.15 at the SDSU Indoor Classic.
200m - The women’s 200 meter dash is scheduled for a 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, February 26. Sharolyn Joseph Hamblet of Lincoln has the league’s fastest time turning in a 24.53 at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic. Mary Bergman of Southwest Baptist has the second fastest time with a 24.60 finish at the UCM Invite. Kimberly Bailey, also of Lincoln, posted the third fastest time with a 24.61 at the Hillsdale meet.
The men’s 200 meters will run off at 3:50 p.m. on the last day of the MIAA Indoor Championships. Fort Hays State’s Dillando Allotey has the 10th fastest time in the country after he finished in 21.44 at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Taysean Goodwin of Emporia State has the second fastest time in the league at 21.56 which he turned in at the Husker Invitational. His teammate Duke Tibbs is third after finishing in 21.66 at the same meet.
3000m - The women’s 3000m run is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start on Sunday, February 26. The fastest time in the league belongs to Southwest Baptist’s Katherine Sitzes who finished in 9:46.60 at the Crimson and Gold Invitational. Morgan Benesch of Nebraska-Kearney will enter the weekend with the second fastest time turning in a 9:48.57 at the SDSU Indoor Classic. Micki Krzesinski of Fort Hays State turned in a 10:04.01 at the Husker Invite which will be third.
The men’s 3000m run is scheduled for a 4:25 p.m. start on the final day of the MIAA Indoor Championship. Vincent Kiprop of Missouri Southern has the nation’s second fastest time finishing in 8:04.04 at the Gorilla Indoor Classic. Cole Wellnitz of Nebraska-Kearney boasts the second fastest time in the league with an 8:22.83 finish at the Husker Invitational. Jacob Klemz of Washburn will enter with the third fastest time finishing in 8:28.51 at the MSSU Lion Invite.
4x400 Relay - The women’s 4x400 relay will be the second to last event of the MIAA Indoor Championships scheduled to get underway at 4:50 p.m. Pittsburg State is automatically qualified for the national meet after turning in a 3:42.73 at the Gorilla Indoor Classic which stands as the nation’s fastest time. Southwest Baptist is also automatically qualified with the nation’s third fastest time at 3:43.21 at the GVSU Big Meet. Lincoln is sixth in the nation turning in a 3:45.64 at the Nebraska Tune-Up.
The men’s 4x400 relay will be the final event of the MIAA Indoor Championships scheduled to get underway at 5:05 p.m. Emporia State has the second fastest time in the country turning in a 3:12.53 at the Crimson and Gold Invitational. Lincoln sits sixth in the country right now after finishing in 3:13.06 at the same meet. Central Missouri has the third fastest time in the league coming into the weekend after they ran a 3:14.77 pace at the Gorlla Indoor Classic.
