KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced a new Athlete of the Week for week three of the 2026 women’s tennis season, presented by
ClassicCourt – the official tennis surface of the MIAA. Washburn’s Jasel Bailey was named the MIAA Athlete of the Week to claim the Ichabods’ first weekly honor of the season.
MIAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jasel Bailey, Washburn
Jasel Bailey helped No. 11 Washburn to an undefeated week, upsetting No. 8-ranked Midwestern State 4-2. Bailey and Saajida Razick teamed up to win 6-1 at No. 3 doubles over The Mustangs’ Alessia Dolce and Mala Sullivan. In singles play, the sophomore from Claremore, Okla., provided the match-clinching point, winning in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) over Jasmine Crain of Midwestern State at the No. 4 position.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Giulia Russu, Emporia State
Giulia Russu was the only Hornet to win in both singles and doubles in Emporia State's 4-3 come-from-behind win at former MIAA member Southwest Baptist. Russa teamed with Ana Fatjo Coll to earn the Hornets’ only win in doubles. In singles play, Russu, a freshman from Italy, evened the dual at 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5. The win was Emporia State's first win over SBU since 2011.
