KANSAS CITY, Mo. – MIAA softball regular
season co-champions Emporia State and Nebraska-Omaha combined for
eight All-MIAA First Team selections, and swept the four
end-of-season awards to highlight the all-conference team announced
prior to the start of the 2010 MIAA Championship Thursday at the
Blue Valley Sports Complex. The selections were made by the
league's 11 head coaches, and coaches were not permitted to vote
for their own players.
Emporia State third baseman Miranda Campbell was named the 2010
MIAA Player of the Year after a season in which she maintained a
.504 batting average, had a .934 slugging percentage, hit 13 home
runs and drove in 61 runs, all tops in the conference. The senior
from Bogota, Texas, was also the only unanimous All-MIAA First Team
selection.
Nebraska-Omaha junior Beth Haley is the 2010 MIAA Pitcher of the
Year. The Highland, Ind., native tied for the MIAA lead with 20
wins on the season. Haley was also an All-MIAA First Team pick.
Emporia State pitcher Paige Ladenburger was honored as the 2010
MIAA Freshman of the Year after leading the MIAA with a 1.47 earned
run average. The Topeka, Kan., product was an All-MIAA First Team
selection as well.
Emporia State head coach Kristi Bredbenner and Nebraska-Omaha head
coach Jeanne Scarpello were voted 2010 MIAA Co-Coaches of the Year
after posting 40-plus win seasons and sharing the regular season
conference championship with identical 18-2 league records. It is
the third coach of the year honor for Bredbenner, and the first for
Scarpello.
Nebraska-Omaha led the way with five first-team selections,
followed by Emporia State with three, Northwest Missouri with two,
and Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State with one apiece.
