2010 All-MIAA Women's Tennis Team Announced

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three singles players and one doubles team from 2010 MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament Champion Washburn were named All-MIAA First Team to headline the all-conference team released by the league office Thursday. The selections were made by the league's eight head coaches, and coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
 
Washburn senior Trang Le Nguyen was named MIAA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after going a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 singles and 6-1 at No. 1 doubles during conference play. The Dak Lak, Vietnam, native dropped just one game in the MIAA Tournament at No. 1 singles, the championship match in which she won, 6-0, 6-1. Le Nguyen was also voted All-MIAA First Team at No. 1 singles and All-MIAA Second Team at No. 1 doubles.
 
Faiga Schmidt of Southwest Baptist is the 2010 MIAA Freshman of the Year after going 5-2 at No. 3 singles and 4-2 at No. 1 doubles in conference action. The Nova Hamburgo, Brazil, native also picked up All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors at both No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles.
 
Washburn head coach Dave Alden was voted 2010 MIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Blues to a 6-1 conference record during the regular season and the MIAA Tournament Championship. It is the first women's coach of the year honor for Alden at Washburn.
 
Southwest Baptist senior Jolee Cook was honored with the Sportsmanship Award. The Rowlett, Texas, product also earned All-MIAA Second Team honors at No. 1 singles and All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 1 doubles.
 
Nebraska-Omaha and Emporia State tied for the second-most first team honorees with three (one singles player, 1 doubles duo each), followed by MIAA regular season champion Northwest Missouri with one.
 
With its conference tournament championship, Washburn earned the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Lady Blues will take on Abilene Christian from the Lone Star Conference May 6 in the first round of the South Central Region #1 preliminary round tournament.
