11/2/2026 3:30:00 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association has announced new Football Athlete of the Week awards, presented by FieldTurf, for week 10 of the 2026 season. Five student-athletes from four different institutions claimed this week’s honors with Washburn’s Logan Madden named the Offensive Athlete of the Week, Central Missouri’s Brian Dykstra and Washburn’s JC Heim named Co-Defensive Athletes of the Week, and Northwest Missouri’s Davis Barr and Missouri Southern’s David Bethune named Co-Special Teams Athletes of the Week.

OFFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:  Logan Madden, QB, Washburn
Logan Madden threw for a career-high four touchdown passes in Washburn’s 55-40 win over Missouri Western this past Saturday (Oct. 31) in Topeka. The sophomore quarterback completed 13-of-19 passes for 336 yards and recorded his first career catch and touchdown reception for 26 yards against the Griffons. Madden led the Ichabods to touchdowns on five of their first six possessions in the game. He’s the first Ichabod to be crowned the MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week in the 2026 season.

CO-DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:  Brian Dykstra, DB, Central Missouri
Brian Dykstra made two key defensive plays in Central Missouri's 31-13 win over Fort Hays State on Halloween Saturday in Warrensburg. The senior defensive back recovered a fumble with eight minutes to go in the third quarter and returned it 27 yards to the house for a touchdown, putting the Mules ahead by 24-13. On the very next Fort Hays State drive, Dykstra intercepted a pass on fourth down at the UCM nine-yard line to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. He also added four tackles and one pass breakup in the victory. Dykstra’s fumble recovery for a touchdown was the Mules’ first since the 2022 season. He is the first Mule to be honored as an MIAA Defensive Athlete of the Week this season.

CO-DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:  JC Heim, LB, Washburn
JC Heim once again led the Ichabod defense in Washburn’s 55-40 win over Missouri Western this past Saturday (Oct. 31). The junior linebacker totaled a game-high 17 tackles, which included 11 solo stops. He added 2.5 sacks for 14 yards and 3.5 tackles for a loss of 17 yards. Heim averaged 16.0 tackles per game in the month of October and continues to lead the MIAA and all of NCAA Division II with an average of 13.6 tackles per game this season.

CO-SPECIAL TEAMS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:  Davis Barr, P, Northwest Missouri
Davis Barr had four of his six punts downed inside the 10-yard line to flip field position consistently for the No. 11-ranked Bearcats in a 59-14 home win over No. 8 Emporia State in Maryville this past Saturday (Oct. 31). Barr's second punt of the game, a 49-yarder, was a coffin-corner edition that went out at the one-yard line. That punt led to the Bearcats recovering a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown on the ensuing possession. Barr's third punt, a 46-yarder, was downed at the seven-yard line. His fourth punt, a 35-yarder, was downed at the six-yard line. His fifth punt, a 64-yarder, was downed at the seven-yard line. In total, the junior punted six times for a 46.0 average — the seventh-best single-game average (minimum of five punts) in Bearcat history. The Hornets returned only one of the six punts for two yards.

CO-SPECIAL TEAMS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:  David Bethune, KR/WR, Missouri Southern
David Bethune delivered one of the biggest special teams plays of the week, returning a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to spark the Lions to a 23-13 victory over rival Pittsburg State in the annual Miners' Bowl — Missouri Southern’s first Miners’ Bowl victory since 2013. With Pittsburg State taking a 13-9 lead with 13:02 remaining in the fourth quarter, Bethune answered on the ensuing kickoff just 17 seconds later. The redshirt senior fielded the kickoff and raced 91 yards for a touchdown, giving Missouri Southern a 16-13 lead and completely shifting the momentum in the Lions' favor. His return put Southern back in front and ignited a fourth-quarter surge in which the Lions scored 14 unanswered points to secure the victory. It was also Bethune's second kickoff return for a touchdown of the 2026 season.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Quincy Torry, RB, Northwest Missouri
Quincy Torry registered his third 100-yard rushing game this season with 106 yards and two touchdowns as No. 11 Northwest upset No. 8 Emporia State 59-14 in Maryville. The sophomore running back carried the ball 13 times for an 8.2-yard-per-carry average. He scored his first touchdown on a 12-yard run in the second quarter to give Northwest a 17-7 edge over the Hornets. He added a two-yard rushing score in the third quarter that upped the Bearcat lead to 45-7. Torry’s longest rush against the Hornets was for 34 yards.

DJ Brown, RB, Central Missouri
DJ Brown paced the Mules offensively in their 31-13 win over Fort Hays State on Halloween Saturday in Warrensburg. The fifth-year rushed for a career-high 169 yards on 21 carries and scored a 31-yard rushing touchdown with 14:30 to go in the fourth quarter. Brown averaged eight yards per carry and lost just one yard against the Tigers.

David Jacquez, LB, Northwest Missouri
David Jacquez intercepted a pass and returned it 63 yards for Northwest's third defensive touchdown of the day in the No. 11-ranked Bearcats’ 45-point upset victory over No. 8 Emporia State. Jacquez's 63-yard pick-six came with 12:46 left in the third quarter and gave Northwest a 38-7 lead over the Hornets. The senior linebacker totaled four tackles and registered a quarterback hurry in the dismantling of the Hornets at Bearcat Stadium.

Kason Messenger, DL, Missouri Southern
Kason Messenger turned in a dominant performance in the Lions' 23-13 victory over Pittsburg State, helping the Lions defense limit the Gorillas to just 13 points and 264 yards of total offense. With the victory, Missouri Southern reclaimed the Miners' Bowl Trophy from rival Pittsburg State for the first time since 2013. The win also marked Southern's first victory over the Gorillas in Joplin since Sept. 18, 1993, when MSSU claimed a 20-3 win. Messenger recorded seven total tackles, including five solo stops, four tackles for loss and two sacks for 21 yards. His four tackles for loss accounted for 29 yards of lost offense, as he consistently disrupted the Pittsburg State backfield throughout the contest. The redshirt senior also recorded both of Missouri Southern's sacks in the game, including a fourth-down sack that ended Pittsburg State’s final possession. His ability to pressure the quarterback and create negative plays was a major factor in the Lions' defensive effort, which held the Gorillas to just 68 rushing yards.
