Defeat SBU 5-3 for first tournament title

Lincoln, Neb. – The Northeastern State women’s tennis team claimed their first MIAA Tournament title with a 5-3 victory over Southwest Baptist snapping a streak of five straight tournament championship for the Bearcats from the Dillon Tennis Complex in Lincoln. Neb.
 
The Riverhawks jumped out early sweeping through doubles, which started with an 8-1 victory at the 2 spot by Easton Parker and Caitlin McCullough. Karla Tomaic and Betka Gombarova earned an 8-1 win at #3 doubles while Val Efimenko and Molly Worden earned the 8-5 win at the #1 slot.
 
The Bearcats would bounce back to open singles with Klara Vickov winning 6-0, 6-3 over Karla Tomaic at #4 singles. Sarah Brown would then earn a 6-0, 6-3 win over Easton Parker in the #5 singles spot. The RiverHawks would go back on top as Betka Gombarova earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at the #6 singles spot.
 
The Bearcats would respond to get back within one as Lara Soares earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at the #1 singles spot. The RiverHawks clinched the title with a  2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win by Caitlin McCullough at the #3 singles spot.
 
Northeastern State earns the MIAA’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division II National Tournament while all other teams will find our their fate when the field is announced at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 at www.ncaa.com.
