Kansas City, Mo. – Here is week two of “Throwback Thursday,” as we take a trip through the archives of the MIAA’s 105-year history.
Over the course of the next three “Throwback Thursdays” we will take a walk down memory lane with a look back at the previous MIAA Basketball Championships leading up to the 15th Anniversary of the MIAA Basketball Championships in Kansas City at historic Municipal Auditorium on March 2-5, 2017.
In this week’s “Throwback Thursday” we review some of the highlights from the 2007-09 championships.
2007: Central Missouri claimed the MIAA men’s basketball championship with a 59-56 victory over Pittsburg State while Washburn pulled out a one-point 71-70 win over Missouri Western for the women’s title. Tiffany Davis of MWSU set the tournament record in assists as she finished with 15 against Pittsburg State in the quarterfinal round and went on to set a new top mark for Kansas City with 27 in the tournament. The Northwest Missouri men set a tournament record for most free throws made with 36 in the quarterfinal round against Missouri Southern.
2008: Northwest Missouri won 57-51 over Emporia State for the MIAA men’s championship and also claimed the title on the women’s side with an 82-58 win over Southwest Baptist. Jojuana Jones of Central Missouri set a new tournament single game rebound record with 21 against Southwest Baptist in the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals of the men’s tournament NWMSU held PSU to a tournament low for points in a game with 42 in the quarters. In 2008 for the first time in Kansas City a #8 seeded defeated a #1 seed as the Emporia Statemen defeated Southwest Baptist in the opening round, setting off a string of three straight tournaments in which the top seed feel in the opening round.
2009: The Central Missouri men won the first overtime championship game 86-84 over Missouri Western and Washburn claimed the women’s title with a 78-69 win over Emporia State. On route to the MIAA title the Mules won three overtime games, a MIAA tournament record, winning each game by three points or less. On the women’s side Janice Bright of WU scoring 56 points over three games.

The 2017 Championships will be held on Thursday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 5th. KC All-Tournament tickets are $65 and Adult Single Session ($20) and Student Single Session tickets ($5) Children 6 and under are admitted free.
