Cary, N.C. – Central Missouri outhit Lander 11-4, but could not pull out the win in a 4-3 walk-off loss in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Baseball World Series.
Lander struck first as Zach Daly homered down the right field line to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. The Mules would rebound in the top of the third inning as Jake Alexander singled to right and Dylan Farrell scored as a result of an error in right field.
UCM would break the tie in the top of the eighth as they took advantage of an error and a passed ball to bring home Matt Elliott. The Bearcats would regain the lead as John Mangum homered to left field driving in two to give LU the 3-2 lead.
In their last at-bat UCM would tie things up on a bunt single by Matt Elliott as things went to the bottom of the ninth. Lander would then scored on a single to left field in the bottom half of the ninth for the walk-off win.
For the Mules Matt Elliott, Dyan Farrell, Jake Alexander and Matt Safranek each collected two hits. On the mound Tyler House got the start pitching five innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Central Missouri will now face Franklin Pierce at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31 from the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C.
