Hornets defeat top seeded St. Cloud State 6-4 in 12 innings

St Cloud, Minn. – It took extra innings to decide but sixth seeded Emporia State eliminated top seeded St. Cloud State 6-4 in 12 innings at the NCAA Division II Central Regional.
 
Emporia State struck first in the top of the first inning as Tucker Perkins scored on a passed ball. In the top of the second they tacked on a second run as Dalton Wheat singled to the pitcher to drive home Wade Hanna.
 
SCSU would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Zack Hoffman homered to left center. The Hornets would answer the Huskies run in the top of the fifth as Derek Francis grounded out to second to drive hoe Perkins.
 
St. Cloud would come back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as a single and a sacrifice fly scored two runs making it a 3-3 game. They would then take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored via an ESU error.
 
The Hornets would tie things up in the top of the eighth inning as Perkins hit a single to center scoring Jonny Hodges. In the top of the 12th inning Perkins broke the tie as he homered to right field driving in Levi Ashmore who had singled to lead off the inning.
 
For the Hornets Tucker Perkins was four for seven with three runs scored and three runs driven in, including the game winner. Derek Francis went three for six with a  runs riven in and Aaron Gile, Dalton Wheat Daniel LaMunyon and Levi Ashmore all finished with two hits.
 
On the mound Jordan Plank pitched six innings in relief striking out five and allowing just one hit to pick up the victory.
 
Emporia State will face off with fourth seeded Arkansas-Monticello at 12 noon tomorrow with the winner of that game needing to win one more to advance to the championship from Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
