St. Cloud, Minn. – Sixth seeded Emporia State took advantage of 10 walks by third seeded Minnesota-Duluth to pull out a 4-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional.
The Hornets finally broke through in the top of the seventh inning as Evan Koehler drew a bases loaded walk to bring Dalton Wheat home. One batter later Daniel LaMunyon scored on a error by the pitcher on an attempted pickoff .
The Hornets would grab some insurance in the top of the eighth inning as LaMunyon doubled down the left field line to drive in Wheat. Wade Hanna would then single on a bunt to third base later in the inning to score LaMunyon.
For the Hornets LaMunyon went two for five with two runs scored and a run driven in while Wheat crossed the plate twice. Evan Koehler was one for two but drew a game high three walks also driving in a run.
On the mound Tyler Stubblefield threw his second straight complete game as he scattered four hits and allowed only five total base runners while striking out 11 to pick up the win.
ESU will face second seeded Central Missouri at 8:30 p.m. on May 20 from Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
