Kansas City, Mo. – Northwest Missouri and Emporia State split the opening double header in the MIAA men’s and women’s basketball.
Northwest Missouri at Emporia State
WBB: #1 ESU 80, NWMSU 44
#1 Emporia State held Northwest Missouri to just 16 second half points as they picked up a win at home. ESU shot .439 from the field as they opened league play at 1-0 overall.
The Lady Hornets were led by Kelly Moten had 18 points and Kelsey Barnwell added 14 points. Addie Lackey and Kathryn Flott each scored 10 points and Whitney Gordon and Amber Vandiver each pulled down eight boards. For the Bearcats Ariel Easton led the way with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. Morgan Walker had a team best three assists and Shelby Mustain added three blocked shots.
MBB: NWMSU 63, ESU 57
Northwest Missouri overcame a four points halftime deficit to earn a victory on the road at Emporia State. NWMSU moved to 1-0 on the season they won the battle on the glass pulling down 32 total rebounds.
For the Bearcats Grant Cozad had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Justin Pitts led the way scoring 18 points, Zach Schneider added 16 points and Conner Crooker finished with 13 points. For the Hornets Terrence Moore led the way with 17 points and Tyler Jordan pulled down six rebounds. Jevon Taylor finished with 13 points and Micah Swank dished out four assists.
