Second straight for the Lopers

Kansas City, Mo. – Nebraska-Kearney in their first year after joining the MIAA brought home a National Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Lopers clipped St. Cloud State by just three points to win their second straight team title.

Daniel DeShazer got things going for the Lopers grabbing a 7-5 decision over Andrew Pokorny of St. Cloud State for the National Championship at 133 pounds. Brock Coutu would wrestle to a third place finish at 141 pounds for UNK.

UNK kept things rolling as Raufeon Stots won his second straight National Championship at 149 pounds with a 4-3 decision over Jacob Horn of St. Cloud State. The National Champion did not come from Nebraska-kearney, but did come out of the MIAA as Cory Dauphin of Central Oklahoma won 4-2 at 157 pounds.

Chase Nelson grabbed more important points at 165 pounds as he finished in second place falling 7-5 to Joey Davis of Notre Dame College. Romero Cotton put the finishing touches on things forcing overtime in his championship match at 197 pounds before falling 5-4 to Matthew Baker of Maryville.

For UNK and coach Marc Bauer it is their second straight national title and their third overall after winning in 2008. Central Oklahoma finished fourth at the meet and had six All-Americans and Truman also added a third place finisher.
