KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced a new Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week, presented by
Southern Bank. Northeastern State’s Trey Phipps has been named Week 13’s MIAA Athlete of the Week – his second honor of the 2024-25 season.
MIAA MEN’S BASKETBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Trey Phipps, Northeastern State
Trey Phipps led the league last week with an average of 22.5 points per game as the RiverHawks mounted double-digit comeback wins against Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern. Northeastern State opened Week 13 with the program’s third consecutive home win against Pittsburg State – something the program hasn't done since the 1980s. The RiverHawks trailed the Gorillas by 19 points in the win with Phipps being instrumental in the comeback, knocking down two three-pointers and going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Later in the week, while trailing by one point to the Lions, Phipps forced a steal with seven seconds remaining to flip the script and give the RiverHawks a one-point win (94-93) and its first sweep of Missouri Southern since 2013. The fifth-year guard finished the week with 13-of-31 (.419) shooting overall, 6-of-16 (.375) from the three-point range and a flawless 13-of-13 at the free throw line. He also added six assists, four rebounds and three steals in the contests.
