KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association has announced its 12th MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week for the 2024 season, presented by
Rocket Alumni Solutions.
Augustana’s Henry Dornbusch was named the Athlete of the Week in the North Division and Southern Arkansas’s Ole Valkyser was named the Athlete of the Week out of the South Division.
North Division Athlete of the Week – Henry Dornbusch, Augustana
Henry Dornbusch went 2-0 this past weekend from No.1 singles and 1-1 from No. 1 doubles as Augustana fell to Northwest Missouri 6-1 but bounced back with a 7-0 win over Mount Marty. Dornbusch tallied the only point for Augustana against the Bearcats with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Michael Delebois at No. 1 singles. In the win over the Lancers, Dornbusch dominated the court with set scores of 6-0, 6-0 and a doubles score of 6-2 with teammate Thomas Kano.
South Division Athlete of the Week – Ole Valkyser, Southern Arkansas
Ole Valkyser went 2-0 in singles play as the Muleriders defeated MIAA/GAC opponents Nebraska Kearney (5-2) and No. 6-ranked Washburn (4-3). Valkyser rallied to defeat UNK’s Osmond 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. He also rallied to defeat Washburn’s No. 9-ranked Tim Hammes 3-6, 7-6 (15-13), 6-4 at No. 1 singles in a key in-region win for Southern Arkansas.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Daniel Bird – Washburn (North Division)
Daniel Bird went a combined 3-0 at No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles. In No. 6-ranked Washburn’s win over Southeastern Oklahoma State, Bird and Sebastian Pjontek won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to begin the match and won a key singles point winning in two sets over Vinicius Outor at No. 6 singles. In the loss to No. 40 Southern Arkansas, his and Pjonteks doubles match was left unfinished and Bird won in two sets over Pierre Copin at No. 6 to set up match point.
Mason Meier – Northwest Missouri (North Division)
Mason Meier scored a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles and a victory at No. 3 doubles to help Northwest score a 6-1 dual win over Augustana. Meier is 12-10 in singles play this season and 14-6 in doubles play. He and teammate Martin Sanchez have posted a 12-4 mark at No. 3 doubles this spring.
Andy Brisdon – Nebraska Kearney (North Division)
Andy Brisdon went 3-1 last week, winning both singles matches against Southern Arkansas and Southeastern Oklahoma State and going 1-1 at No. 3 doubles with freshman Jakub Strzelecki.
