KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced the seed and pairings for the 2024 MIAA Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by
Southern Bank. The men's first-round games tip-off Wednesday evening inside Kansas City's historic Municipal Auditorium.
The 2023-24 MIAA men’s basketball regular season concluded on Saturday, March 2. The top ten teams in the league will travel to Kansas City next week to compete in the MIAA’s 21st Basketball Championships in Municipal Auditorium.
Ending the season on a 13-game winning streak, Northwest Missouri captured its 11th consecutive MIAA title. The 2023-24 crown marks the 24th regular season championship for the Bearcats – the most in MIAA history. Northwest has won 17 outright MIAA titles and shared seven others.
With a first-round bye in the MIAA tournament, the Bearcats will play their first postseason game at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. They will take on the winner of the championship’s opening game against the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds who open the men's tournament on Wednesday.
Also receiving a first-round bye is Fort Hays State. The Tigers were tabbed the No. 2 seed after finishing 17-5 in the league and 22-6 overall. Fort Hays will begin play in the 2024 tournament at 8:15 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the first-round match-up between the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds.
Pittsburg State clinched the No. 3 seed with an MIAA record of 15-7 and 19-9 overall. The Gorillas will take on No. 6-seeded Central Oklahoma at 8:15 p.m. on Friday, March 8. The Bronchos ended regular season play with a 12-10 league record, earning the No. 6 seed over Emporia State by MIAA tiebreaker protocol.
Washburn and Rogers State both finished the 2023-24 season with league records of 14-8. The Ichabods tabbed the No. 4 seed over the Hillcats by the Association’s tiebreaker protocol. Washburn and Rogers will face off in the MIAA quarterfinals, set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
No. 7-seeded Emporia State will take on No. 10-seeded Lincoln at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The Hornets also went 12-10 in MIAA play while the Blue Tigers ended the regular season with a 9-13 league record and went 14-14 overall.
Missouri Southern will be the No. 8 seed and Missouri Western will be the No. 9 seed. The Lions went 11-11 in MIAA action and 13-15 overall while the Griffons finished with an MIAA record of 10-12 and went 16-12 overall. The duo will open the men’s championship with a 6 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday.
