MIAA Sends 132 Track and Field Student-Athletes to 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – One-hundred and thirty-two MIAA student-athletes qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee has announced the participants for the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colorado at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl.

A total of 754 Division II student-athletes, 377 men and 377 women, will compete in the 2023 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The MIAA will have 132 student-athletes, 75 men and 57 women, represented at the national championships.

Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching a provisional standard established for each event.

On the men’s side, Pittsburg State will send a MIAA-best 15 student-athletes to the outdoor championships. Missouri Southern, Nebraska Kearney and Northwest Missouri each had 10 student-athlete qualify. Lincoln will send nine from the men’s team while Central Missouri sends eight, Washburn sends six and Fort Hays State sends five. Emporia State is the final MIAA member to send individuals from their men’s team with two qualifiers.

Entering the championships, a MIAA student-athlete will be the be the top qualifier in six different events. Missouri Southern’s Peyton Barton currently owns the top distances in both the men’s hammer throw and discuss throw. Northwest Missouri’s Reece Smith enters the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with the top time in Division II. Pittsburg State’s Henry Kiner owns the top mark in the men’s triple jump while Cordell Tinch enters nationals as the one to beat in the men’s long jump and 110-meter hurdles.

The MIAA also had six of its men’s student-athletes qualify for nationals in three different events while Lincoln’s Troy Whyte qualified for a league-best four events – 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay.

On the women’s side, Lincoln qualified a league-high 11 student-athletes to the 2023 outdoor championships. Northwest Missouri will send 10 of their women’s student-athletes while Pittsburg State sends nine and Washburn sends six. Both Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern qualified five on the women’s side, Central Missouri and Nebraska Kearney both qualified four and Emporia State will send a duo of Hornets. Missouri Western was the final MIAA member to qualify a student-athlete on the women’s side.

Five MIAA student-student athletes enter the women’s championships as the top seed in their event. Central Missouri’s Madi Wulfekotter currently own the top mark in the women’s pole vault, Fort Hays State’s Rhyann Brown enters the women’s javelin throw competition with the best distance in Division II, Lincoln’s Shenese Walker has the top time in the women’s 100-meter dash, Missouri Southern’s Samariae Bonds has the top distance in the women’s shut put, and Pittsburg State’s Auna Childress enters the women’s triple jump competition with the top distance in Division II.

The MIAA also had three student-athletes on the women’s side qualify for nationals in three separate events. Fort Hays State’s Mattie Rossi will compete in the 100-meter hurdles, the 400-meter hurdles and the women’s heptathlon. Northwest Missouri had two individuals qualified for three events each on their team. Chloe Saenz will compete in the 400-meter dash and be a member on the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams while Luisarys Toledo will also compete in the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay, and in the in women’s long jump.

The championships will be held May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colorado at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl. Colorado State University, Pueblo will serve as host of the championships. The championships will be streamed live on www.NCAA.com.
