EDMOND, Okla. – Washburn defeated Northwest Missouri 4-0 in the title match of the 2023 MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Championship, played at
Edmond Center Court. It is Washburn's first conference championship victory since 2009-10.
Washburn entered the championship as a No. 2 seed from the North Division, outscoring opponents 12-2 on their way to the title.
Opening the quarterfinals against GAC No. 3 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State, the Ichabods came out victorious with a 4-2 win, sending them to the semifinals to face GAC No. 1 Harding. Washburn handled business in the semifinal early, sweeping the Bison 4-0 and clinching a spot in the championship match.
Northwest Missouri entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed overall and No. 1 seed from the MIAA. The Ichabods put the pressure on the Bearcats early, scoring a point in the opening doubles matches. Washburn went on to sweep Northwest Missouri 4-0, claiming the conference title.
Washburn earned the Association's automatic bid to qualify for the NCAA Regional Tournament for a third consecutive season. The NCAA Regional field will be announced on Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m. CT on NCAA.com and the first rounds will take place between May 6 and 9.
