KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its All-MIAA/GAC teams and postseason awards for the 2023 men’s tennis season.
Northwest Missouri Andrea Zumurri was named the MIAA/GAC Player of the Year for the third consecutive season while the Bearcats Head Coach Mark Rosewell was voted the MIAA/GAC Coach of the Year by his peers. There was a three-way tie for the MIAA/GAC Freshman of the Year among Harding’s Cian Mikkelsen, Northwest’s Jan Skerbatis and Southern Arkansas’s Mathieu Wierniezky. Phil Exner of Ouachita Baptist was earned the Sportsmanship Award.
A three-time MIAA/GAC Player of the Year,
Andrea Zamurri helped lead Northwest Missouri to the top MIAA seed in the postseason tournament for the second straight season. The Bearcats finished a perfect 7-0 against MIAA/GAC opponents and own a 13-5 record overall. Zamurri, a junior from Rieti, Italy, posted an 8-4 record at No. 1 singles in dual action. He also owns a 8-2 dual records in doubles with teammate Fillippo Piranomonte.
Northwest Missouri Head Coach
Mark Rosewell tabbed the MIAA/GAC Coach of the Year award for the 28th time in his career (men’s and women’s). In his 41st season at Northwest, Rosewell led the Bearcat men to their 15th MIAA Regular Season Title and the top seed in the MIAA/GAC tournament.
A trio of student-athletes share this season’s MIAA/GAC Freshman of the Year title.
Harding’s
Cian Mikkelsen owns an 8-4 record in singles action from five different positions. The first year from Zoetermeer, Netherlands excelled in doubles competition this season going a perfect 15-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with teammate Cas de Ruiter. Mikkelsen and de Ruiter earned Second Team All-MIAA honors for their performaces at No. 2 doubles.
Northwest’s
Jan Skerbatis finished regular season competition with a 5-2 singles record and 6-1 doubles record against MIAA/GAC opponents. Skerbatis, a 6-2 freshman from Koenigsbrunn, Germany, played singles at positions 3-6 and owned an overall record of 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles action with teammate Fabien Calloud. The duo earned Second Team All-MIAA honors at No. 2 doubles.
Southern Arkansas’s
Mathieu Wierniezky is a 6-0 first year from Pairs, France. He went 4-1 against MIAA/GAC opponents playing at positions 2-4. He also teamed up with four different Muleriders to compete in eight doubles matches this season. Wierniezky also earned All-MIAA/GAC Honorable Mention honors at No. 3 singles.
Ouachita Baptist’s
Phil Exner was honored with the Association’s Sportsmanship Award. The sophomore from Konstanz, Germany, led the Tigers in wins this season with 23 singles victories and 19 doubles. Exner went 11-2 at No. 2 singles and teamed up with Alex Blanchar to post a 11-7 record at No. 1 doubles. He was as a First Team All-MIAA selected at No. 2 singles.
The MIAA and Great American Conference (GAC) played a north and south divisional schedule. The awards were nominated and voted on by all nine head coaches.

The 2023 MIAA/GAC Men’s Championship is set to begin Wednesday, April 18. Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the quarterfinal matches have been moved to the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University. The remaining matches of the tournament will be play at Edmond Center Court in Edmond, Oklahoma.
