MIAA Announces 2022-23 Wrestling Postseason Awards and All-MIAA Teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its wrestling postseason awards and All-MIAA teams for the 2022-23 season.
 
It was another impressive wrestling season in the Association as all five MIAA programs will send at least one student-athlete to complete at the 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, March 10-11, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
 
Highlighting this season’s postseason awards is Nebraska Kearney’s Billy Higgins and Central Oklahoma’s Shawn Streck, named Co-MIAA Wrestler of the Year. Newman picked up its first-ever MIAA wrestling postseason award with Jevin Foust selected the league’s Freshman of the Year. Central Oklahoma’s Head Coach Todd Steidley was voted the Association’s Coach of the Year.
 
Co-MIAA Wrestler of the Year Billy Higgins has only lost two matches all season, both coming from Division II wrestlers from Michigan and Ohio State. Higgins, a redshirt junior from Council Bluffs, Iowa, went undefeated at 3-0 against MIAA opponents this season while posting a 24-2 record overall at 184 pounds. Higgins enters the national tournament as the top-seed in the 184-pound bracket. He is currently on a 15-match win streak and is 19-0 against Division II competition.
 
Sharing the league’s highest honor with Higgins is Central Oklahoma’s Shawn Streck. Streck helped lead the Bronchos win its third consecutive MIAA championship with an undefeated record in league duals. A junior from Merrillville, Ind., Streck boasts a flawless 22-0 record at 285 pounds. His undefeated season includes 15 bonus wins – nine falls, six major decisions and one technical fall. Steck enters Division II nationals as the top-seeded heavyweight.
 
Jevin Foust is Newman’s first-ever MIAA Freshman of the Year and the program’s first wrestler to earn the Freshman of the Year title since the 2014-15 season. A first year from Arkansas City, Ark., Foust was undefeated at 3-0 again league competition with wins in duals against FHSU, UNK and UCO. He did not compete in the Jets dual against Central Missouri.
 
Todd Steidley has led the top ranked Bronchos to five MIAA titles since UCO joined the Association in 2013. Central Oklahoma finished undefeated in the league to claim its third straight MIAA title. The Bronchos ended the 2022-23 regular season 12-1 overall and are sending a wrestler in all 10 weight classes to the national stage, two of which are top seeds in their brackets.

Preliminary and first-round action of the 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 10, at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse, with the quarterfinals and two rounds of consolations at 5 p.m. The tournament resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals and conclusion of all consolation matches, then concludes with the championship finals at 7 p.m.
