PITTSBURG, Kan. – Pittsburg State women pieced together 183 points to be crowned the 2023 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Champions.
The 2023 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships took place Friday, Feb. 24 through Sunday, Feb. 26 at Pittsburg State’s Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kan.
The victory is the Gorillas’ sixth indoor title in seven years. Pitt State posted the second highest point total in MIAA Indoor Championship history. Jumper Auna Childress scored a MIAA title early in the day, claiming the triple jump crown with a leap of 42 feet, 9.5 inches. Kate Dawson set an early tone on the track by racing to a MIAA championship in the mile run (4:57.88).
Northwest Missouri came in second with 130 points. The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Chloe Saenz, Kennedi Cline, Olivia Sattlefield and Tiffany Hughey blasted a new school record as well as a MIAA indoor record, clocking in at 3:41.44.
Bearcats' Luisarys Toledo finished first overall in the women's 600 yard run as she earned a time of 1:19.66, beating the previous best of 1:21.45 that was set last year. In the women's 800m run, Bailey Blake finished first recording a time of 2:10.50. Northwest also took first, second, and third in the women's 400m dash.
Missouri Southern took bronze at the event, posting 87.67 points. Samarjae Bonds won the women’s shot put with an NCAA Qualifying mark of 14.77m. Kiara Smith won the women’s 60m hurdles with a school, facility and MIAA Indoor Championships record time of 8.20 for the second-fastest time in Division II this season.
Central Missouri notched 80 points with two individual champions. Rachael Molloy won the women’s weight throw (18.12m) and Kayla Goodwin struck gold in the women’s long jump (5.90m). Goodwin was also victorious in the pentathlon to start the weekend, piecing together 3943 points.
Lincoln and Fort Hays State round out the top-five with 45 points each. Lincoln’s Shenese Walker took the title in the women’s 60m dash (7.32).
Central Missouri’s Kayla Goodwin was crowned the high point scorer of the 2023 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
