EDMOND, Okla. – Six teams remain in the 2022 MIAA Softball Championship Tournament after Friday’s second round matchups.
After a three-hour weather delay during the tournament’s opening round, day two of the 2022 MIAA Softball Championship saw clear skis and sunshine at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Gerry Pinktson stadium.
The day began with the tournament’s first elimination games featuring No. 8 seed Emporia State against No. 5 Northeastern State and No. 6 Missouri Southern against No. 2 Central Oklahoma.
The Hornets upset the RiverHawks with a 2-0 victory in game six to end Northeastern State’s time in Edmond. Emporia State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when right fielder Emma Furnish scored on a sacrifice punt by center fielder Brittanie Shepherd. Emporia State’s final run was thanks to a solo shot over right center by catcher Bailey Flewelling for the first home run of the tournament. After falling to No. 7 seed Nebraska Kearney in the championship’s opening round, Central Oklahoma bounced back day two with a 11-3 win over No. 6 seed Missouri Southern. The Bronchos victory was highlighted by a pair of home runs powered by left fielder Jacee Minter. Minter and Shayla Harper had three hits apiece, while Tarin Dubler and Terin Ritz had two each as the Bronchos finished with 13 total hits to the Lions five. Round two’s night games featured the winning teams from the championship’s first round games.
Top-seeded Washburn was the first team to two wins in the tournament as the Ichabods handed No. 4 seed Missouri Western its first loss of the week. Washburn’s 1-0 lead after the opening inning was quicky diminished by the Griffons who took a 3-1 lead after a two-run homer in the top of the third by Western’s designated player Chloe Armstrong. Washburn regained its lead and secured the win in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on five hits, including a two-run bomb from the 2022 MIAA Player of the Year, Jaycee Ginter. Ginter also threw the full seven innings for the Ichabods, allowing 10 hits and three runs while collecting eight strikeouts. To see final box score of game seven,

Rogers State was the second team to claim back-to-back victories in the championship with a dominating 9-0 five-inning win over No. 7 seed Nebraska Kearney. The Hillcats outhit the Lopers 9-2, led by the 2022 MIAA Freshman of the Year Abbey Rogers and leftfielder Makayla Bowman with two hits apiece. The 2022 MIAA Pitcher of the Year Andrea Morales picked up her 28th win of the season. She allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters in just five innings of work.
