KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Pittsburg State University claimed the 2021-22 Commissioner’s Cup, presented by McCownGordon Construction. The Gorillas finished the year with an average of 10.88 through the fall, winter and spring seasons.

The Commissioner’s Cup presented by McCownGordon Construction is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the association’s top-performing school in conference play and is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play.

“It was another banner year for MIAA athletics, highlighted by nine different institutions winning at least one conference championship,” stated MIAA Commissioner, Mike Racy. “Thank you to McCownGordon for their support and sponsorship for this important award and congratulations to the student-athletes, coaches and administrators at Pittsburg State for winning this year’s cup!”

Pittsburg State collected MIAA championships in men’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. The Gorillas also tied for second place in the regular season baseball standings, finished third in women’s cross country and fourth in football.

“This is a tremendous honor for Pittsburg State to win the MIAA Commissioner's Cup for a second time since the award’s inception,” said Gorillas director of intercollegiate athletics Jim Johnson. “There are so many tremendous coaches and student-athletes throughout the conference and a high level of parity among very successful programs in all sports in the MIAA. I think this award is a testament to the hard work our student-athletes, coaches and staff put in and to the collective commitment to prepare for success at the conference level.”

Central Missouri took second place in the Commissioner’s Cup standings with an average seasonal average of 10.78. The Jennies and Mules picked up MIAA titles in volleyball, women’s soccer and baseball. The Jennies also claimed second-place finishes in women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field while the Mules picked up a runner-up finish in men’s golf.

This marks the sixth consecutive year McCownGordon has been the presenting sponsor of the Commissioner’s Cup. McCownGordon has significant experience in a variety of market sectors including planning, servicing, and completing higher education and sports projects and is recognized as one of the region’s largest construction managers with offices in both Missouri and Kansas. The number of points awarded per sport is based on the number of schools that participate in that particular sport. Each institution’s grand point total is then divided by the athletic programs it sponsors, giving an overall average finish for the school.  A complete list of the Points Breakdown and other info on the Cup Scoring System can be found on the MIAA website.
