KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA announced its eighth Baseball Athletes of the Week, presented by
Mammoth Turf, for the 2022 season. Central Missouri swept this week’s honors with John Prudhom selected as the MIAA Hitter of the Week and Brady Gavin named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week.
MIAA Hitter of the Week – John Prudhom – Central Missouri
John Prudhom helped No. 6-ranked Central Missouri extend its winning streak to 17 straight games and earn its fifth consecutive series sweep with a three-game sweep of Rogers State. In the series, Prudhom hit a team-best .545 with six hits, including a double and two homers, to go along with four runs, five RBIs, 13 total bases, one walk, a 1.182 slugging and .538 on-base percentage. He did not strike out in his 11 at-bats on the week. Prudhom went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run in UCM’s 13-5 game one victory before adding a 3-for-4 performance with a homer, RBI and three runs in the 10-7 game two triumph. The senior first baseman wrapped up his week with a 2-for-4 showing, including a double while driving in a run in the Mules’ 5-4 series finale win.
MIAA Pitcher of the Week – Brady Gavin – Central Missouri
Brady Gavin helped Central Missouri up its winning streak to 17 straight games with a sweep over Rogers State. Gavin secured both games two and three for the Mules, getting saves in both contests. In the Mules’ 10-7 game two victory, Gavin entered with two outs in the top of the eighth and proceeded to not allow a hit or base runner in the final 1.1 innings while striking out one and walking zero. Gavin entered in the top of the ninth in the 5-4 series finale win and threw a 1-2-3 frame with a line-out, strikeout and ground-out.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Hitters
Garrett McGowan – Pittsburg State
Garrett McGowan batted .692 and drove in 11 runs in three games as Pittsburg State swept a three-game MIAA series against Fort Hays State. The Blue Springs, Mo., native went 4-for-5 at the plate with six RBI in the Gorillas 14-1 over the Tigers. He delivered the game-winning hit – a three-run double – with one out in the eighth inning in PSU’s 8-5 victory over FHSU in the series finale. McGowan, who is hitting .443 on the season (second-best in the MIAA), is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak.
Parker Dunn – Washburn
Parker Dunn finished with a .533 batting average, eight hits, six runs, six RBI and an .867 slugging percentage to help the Ichabods go 3-1 last week. In the Ichabods’ 9-3 win over Missouri Western, Dunn went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.
Pitchers
Logan Vanwey – Missouri Southern
Logan VanWey got a win in his only appearance last week as he helped the Lions beat Emporia State 15-2 in game two of their series. VanWey threw six of the seven innings in the game, striking out 10, while allowing just two hits and no runs. The senior allowed just one player past first base in the game.
Asher Finke – Newman
Asher Finke earned his fifth win of the season and clinched the Jets fifth road series victory helping Newman to a 3-1 victory over Central Oklahoma. In a full seven innings, Finke totaled eight strikeouts just one run on four hits. The Bronchos lone run came on a sac fly in third inning.
Zach Wiese – Northwest Missouri
Zach Wiese held the MIAA’s top hitting team to two hits in 6.2 innings as Northwest scored a 3-1 win over the Northeastern State RiverHawks. Wiese struck out six batters and limited the RiverHawks to an .095 batting average. The sophomore was touched up for one run in the first and then worked 5.2 scoreless innings after that.
