KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Washburn and Central Oklahoma both advanced through the opening round of the 2022 MIAA Basketball Championships presented by Citizens Bank & Trust.
Ninth-seeded Washburn kicked off No.8 seed Pittsburg State and seventh-seeded Central Oklahoma defeated No.10 Emporia State. Below are game recaps from Wednesday's women's session.

No.9 Washburn 59, No.9 Pittsburg State 53 – Box Score
The No.9 seeded-Washburn Ichabods defeated the No. 8 seeded-Pittsburg State Gorillas in the first round matchup of the 2022 MIAA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Citizens Bank & Trust, 59-53.
The Ichabods shot 39.3 percent (22-56) from the field, 41.7 percent (5-12) from the three-point range and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free-throw line while the Gorillas hit 30.5 percent (18-59) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-17) from behind the arc and 82.4 percent (14-17) from the foul line.
Senior All-MIAA selection Hunter Bentley led Washburn’s offense with 20 points hitting 7-9 from the field, 3-5 from the three and 3-6 at the line. Shae Sanchez tailed 13 points while Nuria Barrientos added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Gorillas offense was led by Jenna Shipley with 12 points and Jayme Jackson with 11. Jackson also led the PSU defense with seven boards and two steals.
Washburn will take on top-seeded Missouri Southern in a quarterfinal match up on Thursday, March 3 at 12 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium.
No.7 Central Oklahoma 88, No.10 Emporia State 53 – Box Score
The No.7 seeded-Central Oklahoma Bronchos defeated No.10 seeded-Emporia State Hornets in the first round of the MIAA Tournament, 88-33.
The Bonchos shot 53.8 percent (35-65) from the field, 45.5 percent (10-22) from the three and 88.9 percent (8-9) from the free-throw line. The Hornets hit 29.3 percent (17-58) from the field, 21.1 percent (7-33) from the three-point range and 80.0 percent (12-15) from the foul line.
First-Team All-MIAA and member of the All-Defensive Team, Kelsey Johnson, led the Bronchos offense with 25 points shooting 12-18 from the floor and 1-1 at the line. Also scoring in double-figures was honorable mention selection Brooke Rayner with 19, Ginger Reece with 14 and Aliyah Llanusa added 10. Rayner led the Bronchos from behind the arc with a team-high four threes. Llanusa and Johnson led the defense with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
All-MIAA honorees Tre’Zure Jobe and Ehlaina Hartman led the Hornets offense with 13 points apiece while Victoria Price added 10. Hartman also totaled a game-high four steals while Karsen Schultz brought down a team-high six rebounds.
The Bronchos will face No.2 seeded Fort Hays State in a quarterfinal match up on Thursday, March 3 at 2:15 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium.
