KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its men’s basketball postseason awards and All-MIAA teams for the 2021-22 season.
Northwest Missouri’s Trevor Hudgins was named the MIAA Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. Central Missouri’s Ja’Cor Nelson was selected as the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. Washburn’s Michael Keegan was honored as the Association’s Freshman of the Year. Head Coach of the Bronchos Bob Hoffman was tabbed the MIAA Coach of the Year.
Trevor Hudgins guided the Bearcats to 18-8 league record and a share of the 2022 MIAA regular season championship and the No.2 seed in the tournament. The title is Hudgin’s third consecutive regular season championship and Northwest’s seventh straight. The six-foot junior guard from Manhattan, Kan. averaged 23.9 points per game to rank second in the league in scoring. He led the MIAA with 225 made field goals and dominated from the three-point range, finishing with a league-high 139 made three-pointers on .422 percent shooting. At the free-throw line, Hudgins owned the second-best percentage in the league at .921 percent sinking 129-of-140. Hudgins also ranked in the MIAA’s top-five in assists (125), assists per game (4.2) and minutes per game (37.4) while is 1.4 assists per game ranked in the top-10.
Central Missouri’s Ja’Cor Nelson helped the Mules return to the MIAA Tournament for the first time in three seasons. Central Missouri went 7-12 in the league and punched their ticket to Kansas City as the No.8 seed. A defensive specialist, Nelson owned a league-high 60 steals with 2.3 steals per game. The 2020 transfer from Division I Campbell University also ranked third in the MIAA with 2.0 offensive rebounds per game and sixth with 130 total boards. Offensively, Nelson ranked in the league’s top-10 field goal percentage (.534) on 149-of-279 shooting while his 14.3 points per game ranked in the top-25.
Washburn’s Michael Keegan led all first-years in scoring and rebounds with 9.2 points per game and 6.2 boards per game. The 6’6” guard from Dyersville, Iowa also ranked third in the MIAA with 26 blocks on the year. He ranked in the league’s top-15 in rebounds per game (5.6) and the top-20 in steals per game (1.1). The Ichabods posted a MIAA record of 16-6 and tabbed the No.4 seed in the tournament.
Central Oklahoma’s Head Coach Bob Hoffman was voted the MIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Bronchos to a share of the program’s first MIAA regular season title since joining the Association in 2012. Central Oklahoma finished 18-4 against MIAA opponents and earned the top-seed in the 2022 tournament.
