PSU Women Crowned 2022 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Champions

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Pittsburg State women won the 2022 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship with 119.5 total points, two individual champions and seven All-MIAA performers.
 
The victory is the Gorillas' fifth indoor title in the last six seasons. Pittsburg State now leads the Association with eight total indoor championships.

The Gorillas had individual MIAA champions in the pole vault and the 200m dash. Kyla Davis defeated Washburn’s Virgi Scardanzan in a jump-off of the pole vault after each cleared 13’ 7.75”. The height is a new facility record in Hughes Fieldhouse. Also setting a new facility record was sprinter Christine Williams. Williams broke her own school record in the prelims of the 200m, then claimed the title in the discipline while lowering her personal best to 23.73 seconds.
 
Northwest Missouri was the championship’s runners-up with a point total of 98 and three MIAA champions. Luisarys Toledo scored the Bearcats' first points of the championships winning the pentathlon at a 22-point advantage. Toledo’s 3,872 points is a facility record and the most ever by a Bearcat woman in the indoor pentathlon. High jumper Jada Shanklin claimed her first MIAA indoor title in the event with a mark of 5’ 8”. Caroline Cunningham then defended her mile run championship as she topped the field with a MIAA indoor record time of 4:53.54. Her time is also a new Northwest indoor record in the event.
 
Lincoln finished third with 86 points and four first-place finishes. The Blue Tigers won the 600y and 800m runs. The 600y champion Maria Diamond won the race setting an MIAA indoor record and a Hughes Fieldhouse facility record with a time of 1:21.45. Kelly-Ann Beckford also set a facility record in the 800m run with a first-place finish in 2:09.32. Lincoln swept the championship’s relay events winning both the 4x400 and distance medley relay. The Blue Tigers 4x400 squad of Jameaka Mannings, Chrissani May, Maria Diamond and Shevanae Thomas finished with a time of 3:42.08 while the distance medley team of Chrissani May, Jameaka Mannings, Maria Diamond and Kelly-Ann Beckford set a new MIAA indoor record at 11:53.02.
 
Defending indoor champions Central Missouri earned a fourth-place finish with 82.5 points and three individual champions. All three of the Jennies solo titles were in field events as Rachael Molloy won the weight throw in a distance of 58’ 1.75”, Ashlan Burton won the shot put with a distance of 50’ 5.50” and Kayla Goodwin won the triple jump with a distance of 40’ 10.25”.
 
Fort Hays State finished fifth with 65 points and one individual champion. Lyric Holman won the MIAA title in the 60m dash for the second year in a row, leading the field with a time of 7.47.
 
Finishing sixth was Missouri Southern with 64 points and two first-place performances. Claire Luallen won the long jump with a mark of 19’ 3.25” and Kiara Smith set a facility record with the second-fasted time in Lions’ history crossing the finishline in 8.48.
 
Nebraska Kearney placed seventh with a total of 55 points and Washburn placed eighth with 44.5 points.
 
Emporia State’s Jenna Ramsey highlighted the Hornets ninth-place finish with 39.5 points. Ramsey broke the MIAA indoor record with a time of 16:57.20 to win the 5000m run. The next day, Ramsey won the 3000m run with a meet record time of 9:49.28.
 
Missouri Western rounded out the top-10 with 35 points. The Griffons claimed one individual title in Hannah Williams, winning the 400m dash in 54.81.
 
Central Oklahoma finished 11th with seven points and Roger State was 12th with six points.
 
Northwest Missouri’s Cunningham was the women’s high point scorer of the 2022 Indoor Championships netting a meet-best 23 team points. She defended her MIAA indoor title in the mile to earn 10 points. She added eight points with a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters. She also tallied five points with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter race.
