PSU Men Win Back-To-Back MIAA Indoor Track & Field Titles

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Pittsburg State men won the 2022 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive season with a point total of 173, six individual titles and 24 All-MIAA performers.
 
The victory is the Gorillas' seventh overall MIAA Indoor title and sixth in the last nine seasons. Pittsburg State had six individual champions with first-place finishes in the heptathlon, the 200m dash, 400m dash, the mile run, the distance medley relay and the triple jump.
 
Trey Mooney earned the Gorillas' first points of the championship setting a new Hughes Fieldhouse facility record in the heptathlon with a personal best 5,614 points. Braden Brewer posted the fastest qualifying times in both the 400m (46.70) and the 200m (21.39). Brewer would go on to win both events, finishing the 200m dash in a time of 21.37 and set a MIAA indoor record in the 400m dash with a time of 46.33. Mason Strader and Connar Southard finished first and second in the mile run. Strader won the event in 4:08.01 with Southard close behind in 4:08.46. The Gorillas 4x400 team of Sam Tudor, Bailey Stone, Nizar Alarahshun and Brewer set a facility record with a championship time of 3:09.19. Henry Kiner was the only PSU champion in the field events, setting a Hughes Fieldhouse record in the triple jump with a mark of 52’ 6.75”.
 
The 2022 Indoor runner-up Nebraska Kearney totaled 97.5 points. The Lopers had individual titles in the 800m run and high jump. Wes Ferguson broke the UNK school record and set a facility record, crossing the finish line in 1:49.47. Lopers high jumper Brayden Sorensen won the discipline with a height of 6’ 11.00”.
 
Missouri Southern finished third with 91 points and three individual MIAA Champions. The Lions final day of the championships were highlighted by a pair of MIAA titles from Ryan Riddle. Riddle crossed the finish line of the 3000m run in a new MIAA Indoor record of 8:06.33, five seconds in front of his nearest competition. Riddle also won the 5000m run in 14:04.35. Josh Fulmer and Peyton Barton represented the Lions in the field events finishing first and second in the weight throw. Fulmer won the event with a mark of 68’ 10” while Barton’s best distance measured 67’ 11”.
 
Central Missouri placed fourth in the championships with 83 points. Antonio Lay was the Mules lone individual title winning the 60m dash in 6.77.
 
Just two points behind the Mules was Fort Hays State in fifth place with a pair of individual MIAA champions. Ryan Stanley and Central Missouri’s Vincent Hobbie each cleared 17’ 2.25” in the men’s pole vault. Stanley only had one miss leading up to the final bar, while Hobbie of had two misses at 16’ 10.25” to break the tie and give Stanley the gold medal. Ethan Lang then successfully defended his title in the 600y run, winning the event for a second year in a row. 
 
Northwest Missouri finished in sixth place with 62 points. The Bearcats claimed the distance medley relay crown with a time of 9:52.81. The squad of Jake Norris, Prince Griffin, Tucker Dahle and Reece Smith tabbed Northwest’s only title of the championships.
 
Lincoln posted 56 points to finish seventh. Rashane Bartlett won the Blue Tigers' only individual title, setting a MIAA indoor record and facility record in the 60m hurdles with a championship time of 7.86.
 
Washburn placed eighth with 32.5 points highlighted by Connor Last’s first-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 24’ 7.75”.
 
Missouri Western totaled 18 points for a ninth-place finish. The Griffons' Jordan Garr claimed MWSU’s only individual title, winning the shot put for the second consecutive season. Garr won the event on his first throw with a personal-best distance of 60’ 7.75”.
 
Emporia State placed 10th at the championships and Rogers State finished 11th.
