KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its postseason awards and All-MIAA teams for the 2022 football season.
For the second consecutive season, Nebraska Kearney’s TJ Davis was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year. Northwest Missouri’s Elijah Green was voted the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. Also earning back-to-back postseason honors was Washburn’s James Letcher Jr., named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Pittsburg State received two of the Association’s postseason awards with Kolbe Katsis named the MIAA Freshman of the Year and Brian Wright named the MIAA Coach of the Year.
TJ Davis and James Letcher Jr. are the first student-athletes to repeat MIAA postseason honors since Pittsburg State's running back Germaine Race who recieved the Offensive Player of the Year award in 2005 and 2006.
TJ Davis, the Lopers redshirt senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., played a part in 29 of the UNK’s 44 total touchdowns this season. The 6-3 quarterback dominated the league and currently ranks 13th in Division II with 1,136 rushing yards this season. He had 191 rushing attempts on the season and lead all MIAA rushers with an impressive 103.3 rushing yards per game. Davis also tied for the league-leading 13 touchdowns for 7.1 points per game and 78 total points on the season. From the quarterback position, he finished the 2022 season 87-of-168 with 1,370 passing yards and 16 touchdown passes.
Northwest Missouri’s Elijah Green led the MIAA with 21.0 tackles for loss and 11 total sacks on the season. A native of Maryville, Mo., the senior defensive tackle finished the season with 49.0 total tackles – 36 solo and 13 assisted. His 21.0 tackles for loss (18 solo, six assisted) currently ranks sixth in Division II while he dominated the MIAA with 89 total yards for loss. Green’s 1.0 sacks per game ranks ninth in the nation helped lead the Bearcat defense to a league-leading 38 total sacks on the season.
James Letcher Jr. led the MIAA with 286 punt return yards (26.0 yards return) and 1,079 receiving yards (97.8 yards per game). The second-most yards by a MIAA receiver this season was just 732. He also lead the league with 10 touchdowns in the air. He added a rushing touchdown and returned two punts for touchdowns to tie the Association’s Player of the Year, TJ Davis, with 13 touchdowns for 7.1 points per game and 78 total points on the season.
Playing his first season at PSU, Kolbe Katsis ranked second in the MIAA with 28.1 yards per kick return and was third in the league with 394 total kick return yards. He also recorded the second-longest kick return of the season at 71 yards. A wide receiver, Katsis ranked 13th in the league this season with 40.9 rushing yards per game. The 6-1 redshirt freshman from Owasso, Okla. played in every game for the Gorillas, recording 450 total receiving yards on 20 receptions. He ended the regular season with five touchdowns.
The 2022 season was Head Coach Brian Wright’s third season leading the Gorillas. He led PSU to a flawless 11-0 regular season and secured the program’s 13th MIAA Championship – the first title since the Gorillas shared the honor with Northwest in 2014. The Gorillas offense led the league in scoring with 33.5 points per game while the Gorillas defense allowed the fewest points scored this season, holding opponents to an average of just 15.1 points per game.
