KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its ninth MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the 2021-22 season.
MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week – Lacy Stokes – Missouri Southern
Lacy Stokes averaged 20.3 points, 6.6 assists, 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 steals per game last week while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from free throws. In MSSU’s 78-62 win over Northeastern State, the first-year freshman scored 23 points while dishing out eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds while coming away with four steals. In the Lions 69-50 win against Washburn, Stokes finished with 18 points while providing seven assists and five rebounds while recording her fourth game of five or more steals this season. Stokes closed the week with a game high 16 points to go with five assists and six rebounds. Stokes currently leads the MIAA in assists, assists per game, steals and steals per game while ranking second in assist-turnover ratio. She also leads all freshman in Division II in all five of those categories.
Notable Performances
Katie Wagner – Fort Hays State
Katie Wagner averaged 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in a pair of wins against top-four MIAA opponents last weeks. Wagner opened the week with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in FHSU’s 63-60 win over Northwest Missouri. The freshman also hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Wagner then recorded her sixth double-double of the year in a 74-61 victory against No. 22 Missouri Western, totaling 19 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting.
Karenna Gerber – Pittsburg State
Karenna Gerber averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game as the Gorillas swept a pair of home victories over Emporia State (82-56) and Washburn (69-56) last week. The Halstead, Kan., native shot 90.9 percent from the field for the making, making 10 of her 11 field goal attempts. The true freshman entered the week averaged 5.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Gerber posted a double-double with a career high 19 points and 10 rebounds in Pitt States 26-point win over the Lady Hornets.
Olivia Nelson – Central Missouri
Olivia Nelson helped the Jennies to a 2-0 week with a pair of home wins over Central Oklahoma (88-80) and Newman (55-40), averaging 19 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. The second-year freshman shot 55.6 percent from the floor, 66.7 percent from three-point range and 73.7 percent at the free-throw line on the week. In UCM’s victory over the Bronchos, netted 24 points and dished out five assists while making 12 out 16 free-throw attempts. She then added 19 points and a trio of assists in the win over Newman.
