Bronchos earn back-to-back tournament titles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (Box ScoreThe University of Central Oklahoma defeated Washburn University by a 4-0 score to win the 2021 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship today at the Edmond Center Court in Edmond, Okla. The tournament title is the second-straight for the Bronchos, who also won their first-ever regular-season crown this spring.

Central Oklahoma earns the league's automatic bid and advances to the NCAA Central Regional May 7 - 11 in Edmond, Okla., at the Edmond Center Court.

Top-seeded Central Oklahoma showed dominance throughout the six-team tournament, winning by 4-0 scores against No. 4 Missouri Western yesterday before shutting out No. 2 Washburn by the same score today. The top three singles position were all won by Central Oklahoma. MIAA Player of the Year and No. 1 singles player Adel-Byanu Abidullina took down Washburn's Marta Torres, 6-4, 6-1. MIAA Fresham of the Year Mae Canete in the second spot had the most dominating win with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Svea Crohn. In the No. 3 slot, Isabella Dunlap won 6-4, 6-1 over Maria Soler Valverde.

UCO notched the fourth and deciding match point winning two-out-of-three doubles matches. The Bronchos head into the regionals with a 18-1 record and a 16-match win streak.

Other MIAA teams may earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Regionals. The NCAA announces the regional selections at 7 pm CT on Tuesday, May 4 on NCAA.com
