KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its first MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the 2021-22 season.
MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week – Katie Wagner – Fort Hays State
Katie Wagner led the Tigers in scoring in both opening-weekend contests as Fort Hays State finished 2-0 on the week. Wagner scored a career-high 23 points against Southeastern Oklahoma State and then besting that effort just hours later with 26 points against Sioux Falls. The second-year freshman averaged 24.5 points and 12.0 rebounds for the week while shooting better than 70 percent from the floor (19-of-27). She scored 15 points in the fourth quarter against USF to help the Tigers seal the victory while adding a career-high 15 rebounds in the win, the first 15-15 game for a Tiger since 2017. She also added four assists, four steals and two blocks on the week.
Notable Performances
Lacy Stokes – Missouri Southern
Lacy Stokes averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and had 3.5 steals per game while shooting 81 percent from free throws this past weekend at the GAC/MIAA Challenge in Joplin, Mo. The true freshman point guard announced herself with a 25 point, seven rebound, six assist and four steal performance in the season opening loss, going 2-of-5 from three and 7-of-8 from free throw attempts against Henderson State. For an encore she played in 42 minutes of the Lions overtime loss to Harding, finishing with 21 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, three steals and a block while shooting 10-of-13 from free throw attempts. Stokes is just the second freshman in MSSU history to score 20+ points in back-to-back games to begin a season and scored the 7th most points in a season opener since the 1984-85 season.
Nija Collier – Central Missouri
Nija Collier averaged a double-double with 22 points and 15.5 points per game in the Jennies pair of wins over Northern State and Minnesota State-Moorheard. The Jennies senior scored 18 points and pulled down 12 boards on 6-of-9 shooting, including a 3-for-5 showing performance from three-point range against Northern State. She also had two assists and two blocks in the contest. In the win over MSU-Moorhead, Collier netted a career-high 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting and a 7-for-8 performance at the free-throw line and tallied a career-best 19 rebounds.
Tre-Zure Jobe – Emporia State
Tre-Zure Jobe averaged 24.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as the Lady Hornets opened the season with a pair of wins at the MIAA-GAC Challenge in Joplin, Mo. Jobe scored 17 points in Emporia State’s season opening 86-68 win over Harding. She came back the next day and scored 31 points with six assists, five rebounds and two steals in the Lady Hornets 84-66 win over Henderson State. She passed five former Lady Hornets and moved up to 27th on the Emporia State career scoring list with 1,063 points in 58 career games.
Tristan Gegg – Pittsburg State
Tristan Gegg averaged 29.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of games for Pittsburg State to open the 2021-22 campaign. The Altamont, Kan., native scored a career high 36 points in the Gorillas season opening 62-53 victory over Oklahoma Baptist at the GAC/MIAA Challenge. She followed that up with 23 points and six rebounds in a 79-54 loss to the host school, Southwestern Oklahoma. Gegg shot 48.6 percent (18-37) from the field in the two games, averaging 5.5 3-point field goals per contest. She also shot 92.3 percent (12-13) from the free throw line.
