Kansas City, Mo. – The third-seeded Fort Hays State Tigers outscored sixth-seed Emporia State 20-12 in the fourth quarter to advance to the semifinals in the 2018 MIAA Women’s Basketball Tournament
Fort Hays State (24-5) was led by Carly Heim with 13 points, while Tatyana Legette and Taylor Rolfs had nine points each with Legette adding a team-high nine boards.
Emporia State (17-11) had four score in double-figures, led by Tyra Jones with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jacee Kramer and Jessica Wayne had 11 each.
The Lady Hornets led 13-7 midway through the first quarter, and 16-15 after one quarter, but a layup from FHSU’s Heim just 27 seconds into the second quarter put the Tigers up 17-16 and a layup from Heim with 7:43 to go gave FHSU a 21-16 lead. A bucket from Rolfs near the end of the half, gave the Tigers a 30-26 lead at the break.
A pair of free throws from the Lady Hornets’ Jones gave ESU a 35-33 lead with six left, but a bucket from Lanie Page tied the game back at 35 the next trip down. A layup from Jessica Wayne gave the Lady Hornets a 42-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to go up 45-42 with four minutes left and led 49-47 with 1:36 to go when ESU called a timeout. The Tigers led 57-54 with 9.8 seconds to go and a last-second three from the Lady Hornets would not go.
FHSU will now go on to face the winner of the Pittsburg State – Washburn game at noon on Saturday inside historic Municipal Auditorium.
