Kansas City, Kan. – Northwest Missouri allowed just 97 yards of total offense as they defeated Shepherd 34-7 to win their fifth NCAA Division II National Football Championship.
Northwest Missouri got the scoring going after Cass Weitl recovered a Jeff Ziemba fumble at the five-yard line. Two plays later Jordan Grove would rush in from one yard out giving NWMSU the early 7-0 lead. Following a 74-yard pass to Grove Brady Bolles would find Shane Williams for a one-yard touchdown pass with 6:44 to go in the second quarter.
Simon Mathiesen would add a field goal with 38-seconds to go and Bryce Enyard would return an interception 59-yards for a score 18 seconds later to make it a 24- halftime edge.
In the second half Shepherd got the on the board first as Billy Brown took a 21-yard pass from Jeff Ziemba. Northwest would answer with 4:33 to go in the third as Simon Mathiesen connected again this time from 22 yards.
Grove would add his second touchdown of the day with 8:47 to play, also this time from one-yard out.
Bolles finished with 233 passing while Phile Jackson added 109 yards along the ground. Receiving Grove finished with 104 yards on five catches and Shawn Bane added 64 yards receiving.
Defensively Jacob Vollestedt led the team with 12 total tackles and had two sacks as Northwest Missouri racked up ten sacks. Collins Bevins had six tackles and finished with a team high four sacks.
Northwest Missouri ties the NCAA Division II record for most championship wins in football with their fifth, they tie current FCS member North Dakota State who also won five.
