Springfield, Mo. – Northwest Missouri and Southwest Baptist picked up win in the MIAA Men’s Tennis Tournament Semi-Finals to advance to a match-up tomorrow in the MIAA Championship from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
Northwest Missouri 6, Nebraska-Kearney 1
It was a battle early as top seeded Northwest Missouri faced off with Nebraska-Kearney in the MIAA Men’s Tennis Tournament semi-finals. While at #2 doubles NWMSU got an 8-0 sweep from Guilherme Narducci and Alvaro Riveros over Revel Yehezkia and Fletcher Sheridan. UNK would answer though, as Yeswanth Nadella and John Steinke upset the #20 doubles team of Sergio De Vilchez and Luis Altimires 8-5 in #1 doubles. All eyes would then turn to the #3 doubles court where Rafael Bugiga and Dylan Bernatzky of NWMSU would squeak out a 9-8 (8-6 tiebreaker) win over Arin Enge and Jack Nicholson.
Things then turned to singles where Sergio De Vilchez earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Yeswanth Nadella on the #1 courts. In #2 singles Rafael Bugigia scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory over John Steinke. On the #4 court Alvaro Riveras took his match 6-3, 6-1 over Arin Enge. Finishing simultaneously Jason Harris defeated Daniel Faria 6-3, 6-1 in #6 singles.
Northwest Missouri will advance to the MIAA Men’s Tennis Championship where they will face Southwest Baptist tomorrow at 9 a.m. Nebraska-Kearney will face Washburn at 9 a.m. in the third place match-up.
Southwest Baptist 5, Washburn 4
In a match that lasted 4:42 Southwest Baptist outlasted Washburn to advance to the MIAA Men’s Tennis Championships. It all got started in doubles as Kristof Kinal and Omar El Kheshen of SBU won 9-8 (8-6 tiebreaker) in #1 doubles over Arek Kozaczuk and Steven Fletcher. SBU kept things going as Domingos Carrissimo and Daniel Cardona won 8-4 over Pascal Laucht and Thilo Schlenker in #2 doubles. Washburn would rebound though as they closed out doubles with an 8-3 win by Chance Joost and Bobby Florence over Alex Belote and Guido Margiotta in #3 doubles.
Southwest Baptist pushed their lead to 3-1 as Kristof Kinal defeated Thilo Schlenker 6-3, 6-1 in #2 singles. Washburn would cut the lead to one as Pascal Laucht defeated Omar El Kheshen 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 at #3 singles. SBU would then take a 4-2 lead as Daniel Cardona defeated Steven Fletcher 7-5, 6-2 in #4 singles. Washburn would take the next two match-ups though as Bobby Florence beat Alex Belote 6-1, 6-3 at #5 and Chance Joost won 7-5, 6-2 over Guido Margiotta at #6 singles. It all came down to the #1 singles match where Domingos Carissimo defeated Arek Kozaczuk 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to put his team in the championship.
Southwest Baptist will face Northwest Missouri tomorrow in the MIAA Championship match at 9 a.m. Washburn will face Nebraska-Kearney for third place at 9 a.m. as well.
