Don Corbett - Men's Basketball Coach
Lincoln, 1971-79
Posted a 159-59 record (.729) at Lincoln, the best winning percentage by any LU coach. Went 71-25 against MIAA competition (.739) and led Lincoln to NCAA appearances in five of his eight seasons (1972, 75, 76, 77 & 78). Guided the Blue Tigers to three MIAA regular season championships (1972, 75 & 77). Coached LU to an MIAA Tournament Championship in 1977. Lincoln won no fewer than 17 games per season in his tenure, and won over 20 games four times. Led Lincoln to three 22-win seasons, tying the second-most victories in a season in program history. Led the Blue Tigers to a school record 11-1 season in the MIAA twice (1971-72, 76-77). In 1978, Lincoln advanced to Elite 8 of the NCAA tournament, falling to UW-Green Bay, 63-61. Coached MIAA Hall of Fame Inductee Harold Robertson, who led NCAA Division II in scoring in 1977-78 and twice led the MIAA in scoring (77-78, 76-77) and also coached LaMont Pruitt, who led the MIAA in scoring in 1972-73. Coached six players who were named All-MIAA first team, including Pruitt, who earned the honor three times, and Robertson, who earned it twice. Coached four players (James Hampton, 71-72; Pruitt, 73-74; James Edwards, 1974-75; & Vince Humphrey, 75-76) who led the MIAA in rebounding. Only one of two LU multi-year coaches to leave the program with a winning record. After coaching at Lincoln, took over at North Carolina A&T State, posting a record of 249-133 (.651) over 14 seasons (1979-93). Corbett took A&T to seven MEAC regular season championships, seven MEAC tournament championships and seven NCAA tournament appearances. He was MEAC Coach of the Year six times and shares a record with the University of Kentucky for most consecutive conference tournament championships (seven). He graduated from Lincoln in 1964.
