William "Bill" Cable
Sports Information Director
Truman (1956-95)

Cable spent his first 14 years on campus as the both the director of the University Publications office and creating and organizing the first Sports Information Office on campus.

In 1972, he was named the first full-time Sports Information Director at Truman, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1995. Cable served on various committees for the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), including the prestigious Academic All-American committee. Many of his publications earned "best in the nation" from CoSIDA, and he helped mentor many students that went into the SID or sports-journalism field. He was inducted into the Truman Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989 and was awarded the Warren Berg Award, the highest honor for a college division SID, in 1994 in Chicago at the CoSIDA convention.

Cable was instrumental in maintaining and preserving many conference records and archives prior to a conference sports information office in the early 90s. His record keeping today is still called upon when needed by various sources. Cable was a tireless worker in the community as he served as president of the local Kiwanis club and was also a lieutenant governor within the Mo-Ark district of Kiwanis. After his retirement from Truman, Cable and his wife, Dianthe, directed one of the most successful United Way fundraising campaigns in Adair County.
