Northwest Missouri - Baseball (1986-88)
Scott Spurgeon became Northwest Missouri baseball’s first-ever First Team All-American in 1988. He is still the Bearcats only baseball All-American to date. In just two seasons at Northwest, Spurgeon earned First Team All-MIAA honors each year and was named the Association’s MVP in 1987 as a catcher, and the MIAA Hitter of the Year in 1988 as a third baseman. Spurgeon ranks in Northwest’s top-10 all-time career records in four categories. He still owns Northwest’s all-time slugging percentage record (.872) and ranks second in career batting average (.432). Spurgeon ranks fifth in the Bearcat Baseball records with 30 career homeruns and seventh with 35 career doubles. His 1.007 slugging percentage and 22 doubles in the 1988 season still rank first in Northwest’s single-season records. Following his record-setting season, Spurgeon was drafted by the Huston Astros in 1988. He later went on to earn his Doctorate’s Degree in educational leadership from St. Louis University.
