ESU Sweeps Weekly Men’s Track & Field Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Emporia State teammates Derwin Hall and Josh Honeycutt have been named MIAA Men's Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Week for action from the beginning of the indoor season through Jan. 17 as selected by a conference SID panel. Hall and Honeycutt are the first honorees of the 2010 indoor season.

MIAA MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Derwin Hall, So., Emporia State
Hall has the fastest time in the nation in the 60 meters at 6.77 as of Jan. 17, 2010. The sophomore from Blue Springs, Mo., ranks second all-time at ESU to Sam Williams' 6.74 set at last year's Mule Relays. Hall was top collegiate finisher at the KSU All-Comers meet, finishing behind an unattached runner by less than .005 seconds (both are listed at 6.84). He had the top time in prelims at the Mizzou Invitational, but slipped coming out of the blocks in the finals. Hall won the event at the Wichita State Varsity Apts. Invitational, helping ESU finish second in the team standings behind the host Shockers and ahead of NCAA Division I schools Tulsa, Oral Roberts and Oklahoma State as well as MIAA member Fort Hays State.

MIAA MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Josh Honeycutt, Jr., Emporia State
Honeycutt, the defending national champion in triple jump, has the best mark in Division II in that event this year at the KSU All-Comers meet. The junior from Iola, Kan., has the third-best collegiate jump in the nation this year behind Kyron Foster of Michigan State (52-08.25 feet/16.06 meters) and Andre Black of Louisville (52-07.25 feet/16.03 meters). Honeycutt's 51-09.25-foot jump at KSU is an automatic qualifier and broke Paul Weldon's ESU record of 50-11 feet, set at the 1999 KSU All-Comers meet and is over a foot better than his national championship mark of 50-05.50 feet (15.38 meters) last year. Honeycutt also had an automatic mark at the Wichita State Varsity Apts. Invitational in the triple jump. He leads the MIAA and ranks tenth in the nation in the long jump with his mark of 23-01.25 feet (7.04 meters) at WSU that helped ESU to a second-place showing in the team standings.
