Jones, Boston Selected as Athletes of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Dominique Jones (Fort Hays
State) and Cassondra Boston (Emporia State) have been named MIAA
Basketball Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 19-24
as selected by a conference SID panel. Boston earns her second
award of the season, while Jones is a first-time honoree in
2009-10.
MIAA MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dominique Jones, G, Fort Hays State
Jones scored a career-high 29 points in Fort Hays State's
four-point win at Emporia State on Wednesday. It passed his
previous high of 28 set in the Tigers' win over Central Missouri in
Warrensburg earlier this year. Jones helped the Tigers to their
first win at White Auditorium in four chances since joining the
MIAA in 2006-07. The junior from Harlem, N.Y., scored 18 of his 29
in the second half. With the Tigers trailing by one with 7:00
remaining, Jones scored 11 points in a 14-4 run by the Tigers,
which included a layup to put FHSU in front for good and then three
3-point field goals to push the Tiger lead to nine with 4:02
remaining. The six 3-point field goals made was a season high for
Jones.
MIAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cassondra Boston, G, Emporia State
Boston led No. 6 Emporia State to its league-leading 11th
and 12th straight wins, scoring over 20 points in each game. The
senior from Des Moines, Iowa, started the week with 26 points,
seven rebounds and a career-high five steals in an 88-67 win over
FHSU. Boston scored 21 of her 26 in the second half as the Lady
Hornets outscored the Tigers 54-34 after being up by just one at
the half. She hit back-to-back threes to take ESU from a ten-point
lead to a 16-point lead with 8:19 left in the game. Those threes
ignited a 17-6 run in which Boston scored 13 points as the Lady
Hornet lead grew to 79-58 with 5:387 left. She connected on a
season's best six three-pointers and matched her season high with
seven rebounds against the Tigers. Boston ended the week with a
22-point, five assist effort as ESU avenged its only loss of the
year in a 91-62 win over NWMSU. She had six points, an assist and a
steal as ESU jumped out to a 20-5 lead over NWMSU and never saw the
lead drop below double digits. Boston had her second straight game
with six treys, going six-of-eight from behind the arc.
