Central Missouri, Emporia State March On in Women's Basketball Championship

Central Missouri advances to 27th semifinal; Emporia State advances to 21st

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Central Missouri and Emporia State advanced in the 2020 MIAA Women's Basketball Championships presented by Citizens Bank & Trust. No. 1 Central Missouri defeated No. 8 Washburn and No. 2 Emporia State took care of business against No. 10 Northwest Missouri State. Below are game recaps from today's games.

No. 1 Central Missouri 65, No. 8 Washburn 61 - Box Score
The No. 1 seeded-Central Missouri Jennies advanced to the semifinals of the MIAA Championships with their defeat of the No. 8 seeded-Washburn Ichabods. This is only the second time in the last four years that the No. 1 seed has advanced to the semifinals. 

Central Missouri struggled from behind the arc, going 1-for-20, but were able to win the game by dominating the paint, outscoring Washburn 36-20 in the painted area. Morgan Fleming led the Jennies with 20 points, followed by Megan Skaggs with 15, and Kim Crown with 10. Skaggs led the team with seven rebounds, and Skaggs and Fleming had a team leading four assists each. Skaggs played defensively as well, swiping a game high four steals and swatting one shot. 

Alexis McAfee had 19 points to lead the Ichabods. Reagan Phelan with 16 and Hunter Bentley with 10 rounded out the scorers in double figures. Bentley led Washburn with nine rebounds and three steals. Phelan led the team with four assists. 

No. 1 Central Missouri will take on the winner of No. 4 Pittsburg State and No. 5 Fort Hays State on Saturday at 12 p.m. Pittsburg State and Fort Hays play tomorrow at 12 p.m.

No. 2 Emporia State 80, No. 10 Northwest Missouri 52 - Box Score
No. 2 Emporia State took care of business against No. 10 Northwest Missouri State in their quarterfinal matchup. The Lady Hornets advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2017, when they won the MIAA Championship. 

Points off turnovers and points in the paint were both dominated by Emporia State. The Hornets outscored the Bearcats 22-2 off turnovers, and 34-18 in the paint. 

Mollie Mounsey led Emporia State with a current 2020 MIAA Tournament high, 30 points. She was followed by Tre’Zure Jobe with 24 and Morgan Laudan with 11. Fredricka Sheats led the Lady Hornets with 10 rebounds and Jobe led the team with six assists. ESU's pressure affected the Bearcats, as it came up with 12 steals and forced 17 total turnovers. 

Paityn Rau led the Bearcats with 12 points and tied for a team high seven rebounds with Jayna Green. Kendey Eaton, Erika Schlosser, and Jaelyn Haggard each had eight points. Mallory McConkey and Mia Stillman led the Bearcats with 3 assists. 

Emporia State will advance to the semifinals and take on the winner of No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 6 Missouri Western on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. Missouri Western and Kearney play tomorrow at 2:15 p.m.
