Washburn, Northwest Missouri Win Round One Match-Ups in Women's Basketball Championship

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Washburn and Northwest Missouri both advanced in the 2020 MIAA Women's Basketball Championships presented by Citizens Bank & Trust. No. 8 Washburn defeated No. 9 Missouri Southern and No. 10 Northwest Missouri knocked off No. 7 Central Oklahoma. Below are game recaps from today's games.

No. 8 Washburn 66, No. 9 Missouri Southern 52 - Box Score
The No. 8 seeded-Washburn Ichabods defeated the No. 9 seeded-Missouri Southern Lions, in the first round matchup of the 2020 MIAA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Citizens Bank & Trust, 66-52.

Washburn shot 43.4% from the field, while Missouri Southern shot just 31.1% from the field. Washburn was led in scoring by Shelbe Piggie with 19 points on 7-of-10 from the field. Hunter Bentley added 17 and Reagan Phelan added 10. Alexis McAfee and Phelan led the Ichabods with nine rebounds a piece. McAfee added five assists as well. 

Destiny Cozart had a game-high 20 points for the Lions and Zoe Campbell was also in double figures with 10 points. Amber Buch led Missouri Southern with four assists and Madi Stokes led the team with nine rebounds. 

Washburn will advance to the second round of the tournament and will play No. 1 seeded-Central Missouri at 12 p.m. tomorrow. 

No. 10 Northwest Missouri 71, No. 7 Central Oklahoma 67 - Box Score
The Bearcats shot 43.8% from the field and 40.7% from behind the arc. Northwest was lights out from the free throw line making 20-of-22 free throws. It was the Bearcats first victory in Kansas City at the MIAA Tournament since 2011, when Northwest won their last MIAA Tournament Championship. 

Jaelyn Haggard led the Bearcats with 24 points on the game, on only 10 shots. Haggard went 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Mallory McConkey added 19 points and six rebounds as Jayna Green led the Bearcats with seven rebounds, she also added eight points and two blocked shots as well. 

Kelsey Johnson led Central Oklahoma with 22 points, and was followed by Jaci Littell with 11 points. Johnson added 10 rebounds to give herself a double-double on the day. Shatoya Bronson had six steals for Central Oklahoma.

The Bearcats advance to the quarterfinals and will play Emporia State at 2:15 p.m. in Kansas City at Municipal Auditorium.
