KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA announced its fourth women’s basketball athlete of the week award for the 2019-2020 season. Emporia State’s Jessica Wayne was tabbed with this week’s honor.
Wayne was selected as the athlete of the week for the first time this season. She recorded the first triple-double by a Lady Hornet since 2001 and the first in the Association since 2014. Wayne accomplished the feat with 18 points, 11 rebounds and a school-record 11 steals in a non-conference win over Washburn. Wayne also logged 21 minutes of action in ESU’s win over Bethel as she finished with seven points and eight steals.
Notable Performances
Megan Skaggs - Central Missouri
Skaggs helped UCM to a pair of wins and came within inches of upsetting No. 1 Drury. She averaged 16 points per game, twice scoring 20, with 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest. Skaggs shot 50 percent from the field, hit five three-pointers and was 8-for-9 at the free-throw line in the three games.
Kelsey Johnson - Central Oklahoma
Johnson helped the Bronchos to a home win over Harding, posting a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with six blocked shots. She followed that with nine points and five rebounds in a big road win at St. Marys. Johnson finished the weekend with 17 points and 11 rebounds in an overtime thriller against the defending Division II national champion, Lubbock Christian.
Chris Wilson - Missouri Western
Wilson shot better than 45 percent from the field as she averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, three assists, and 2.5 steals in wins over McKendree and Florida Southern. She pulled down 13 rebounds as MWSU handed McKendree its first loss of the season then scored 20 points in a win over Florida Southern the following night.
