ESU BASEBALL KNOCKS OFF WU IN MIAA TOURNAMENT

St. Charles, Mo. – Second seeded Emporia State scored seven runs in the first inning on the way to a 12-4 victory over third seeded Washburn in the second round of the MIAA Tournament.
 
The Hornets had a big inning in the top of the first plating seven runs on four hits starting with a Tucker Perkins single to left field scoring Dalton Wheat. Levi Ashmore would then walk with the bases loaded before Perkins scored just pitches later on a wild pitch.
 
Daniel LaMunyon made it 5-0 with a two run single to center field and was followed two batter later by Wheat hitting a run scoring double. Braxon Byfield would score the final run of the inning coming home on a wild pitch.
 
Washburn started to cut into the ESU lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Parker Gibson singled in a run and Riley Krane followed that up with a run scoring ground rule double.
 
ESU rebounded in the top of the seventh as Wade Hannah grounded out to drive in a run and then Daniel LaMunyon walked to force home a run. Byfield would then ground out to the third baseman driving in a run making it a 10-2 lead.
 
WU would cut into the lead against in the bottom of the eighth inning as Kyle Carnahan and Lance Barkley each hit sacrifice flies. In the top of the ninth Daniel LaMunyon would get his fourth RBI singling to drive in Ryan McBroom. Byfield added to his RBI total by following that up with a run scoring single.
 
For the Hornets Daniel LaMunyon went four for four with four runs driven in and Braxon Byfield went three for five with two runs batted in. For the Ichabods Parker Gibson went four for five with a run scored and a run driven in 
 
On the mound Garrett Brummett pitched seven innings striking out eight to pick up the victory.
 
Emporia State will advance to the 7:30 p.m. game tomorrow and Washburn will face seventh seeded Central Oklahoma at 9 a.m. tomorrow from Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
