St. Charles, Mo. – Despite getting outhit 17-7, third seeded Washburn took advantage of two errors by sixth seeded Northeastern State 8-4 to open the MIAA Baseball Tournament.
Northeastern State struck first in the top of the first inning as Eric Kirkpatrick singled up the middle and drove in Dakota Woods. They would push the lead out to 3-0 in the top of the second as Michael Rhea singled to shortstop to drive in a run and then Shane Bridges followed with a sacrifice fly.
Washburn would grab a run back to lead off the bottom of the second as David Gauntt homered to left field. They would score again later in the inning Bowe Behymeyer hit a sacrifice fly to score Lance Barkley.
The RiverHawks would make it a 4-2 advantage in the top of the third as Zane Takhar reached on a fielders choice driving in Charles Sims. Washburn would grab a run back in the bottom half as Kyle Carnahan had a sacrifice fly to drive in Zane Mapes.
The Ichabods would grab their first lead at 5-4 as David Gauntt and Kyle Carnahan took advantage of a throwing error to score runs. WU would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Tanner Triggs singled driving in Gauntt. They would tack on two more later in the inning as Zane Mapes singled to center driving in two runs.
For the Ichabods Gauntt went two for three with three runs scored and Carnahan finished with two hits as well. For the RiverHawks Woods went three for five, Kirkpatrick finished two for four as did Zane Takhar.
On the mound for the Ichabods Nick Silva went 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs to move to 9-0 while Greg Mason came on picked up his first save of the season.
Washburn will play the winner of Emporia State/Central Oklahoma tomorrow at 4 p.m. while Northeastern State will face the loser of that game at 9 a.m. from the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
