St. Charles, Mo. – Second seeded Emporia State got 12 hits as they knocked off seventh seeded Central Oklahoma 10-3 in the opening round of the MIAA Baseball Tournament.
Central Oklahoma got the scoring started in the top of the first as Jacob Borrego singled following a Jake Dyer triple to take a 1-0 lead.
Emporia State answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs starting with a bases loaded walk by Wade Hanna. Daniel LaMunyon would then double to right field driving in Evan Koehler and Tucker Perkins. They would stretch the lead to 4-1 with a double from Wade Hanna plating Perkins.
Dalton Wheat would add another run for the Hornets with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-1 lead. LaMunyon would plate a sixth run for ESU in the bottom of the eighth inning as he tripled to left center scoring Levi Ashmore. He would then come around to score a Taylor Steen singled to left center.
The Hornets were not done in that inning as Evan Koehler used a sacrifice fly to plate Dalton Wheat. Ryan McBroom then added on as he singled to drive in B.J. Dean and make it a 9-2 lead. They would then push the lead to 10-2 as Wade Hanna singled to drive in Tanner Cairns.
UCO got a run back in the top of the ninth as T.J. Sparr homered down the left field line.
For the Hornets Perkins went three for three and scored twice while LaMunyon finished two for five with three RBI and Hanna was two for four with three driven in. For the Bronchos Dyer, Borrego and Trae Smith all went two for four on the afternoon.
On the mound Tyler Stubblefield threw a complete game allowing three earned runs on nine hits and striking out nine.
Emporia State will face third seeded Washburn tomorrow at 4 p.m. and Central Oklahoma will face sixth seeded Northeastern State at 9 a.m. form Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
