NWMSU defeats UNK 5-2, SBU tops WU 5-1

Springfield, Mo. – The men’s opening round is in the books as the top two seeded teams will now face off for the MIAA Tennis Championship from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
 
#2 Northwest Missouri 5, #3 Nebraska-Kearney 2
Northwest Missouri was strong in the singles competition to pull out a 5-2 victory over Nebraska-Kearney from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
 
It all started in doubles where UNK took two out of three starting at the #2 spot as Lucas Garces and Mohab Elzanaty earned an 8-3 win. At the #3 spot Joey Richards and Aaron Reekie pulled out the 8-6 win before NWMSU rebounded with Alvaro Riveros and Sergi Fontcuberta winning 9-8 at the #1 slot.
 
In singles NWMSU’s Romain Boissinot earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at #1 while at #2 Fontcuberta pulled out a 6-0, 6-4 win. In the #3 slot it was Riveros winning 6-0, 6-4 before Mauro Tete closed out the match at #4 singles taking it 6-0, 6-4.
 
#1 Southwest Baptist 5, #4 Washburn 1
Southwest Baptist used a strong singles performance to earn a 5-1 victory over Washburn in the MIAA Men’s Tennis Championship.
 
In doubles Sherif Abohabaga and Gyorgy Argoston earned an 8-4 win at the #1 spot while Matt Barlow and Zach Hampton rebounded to win 9-8 (7-2) at #2 for Washburn. In the #3 slot it was Omar Diab and Raul Callabero winning 9-8 (7-3) to make it 2-1 after doubles.
 
In singles Abohabaga opened with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the #1 slot and Chris Blodig took the #2 slot for SBU with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win. Argoston would then close out the match with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at the #3 slot.
 
Northwest Missouri will now face Southwest Baptist in the men’s championships scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 1 from the Cooper Tennis Complex in  Springfield, Mo.
