Kansas City, Mo. – Washburn’s Alejandro Valarezo Plaza and Northeastern State’s Molly Worden have been named the MIAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week.
MIAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza, Washburn
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza was a perfect combined 4-0 at No. 1 doubles and singles as the Ichabods won both matches this week. In singles, he defeated Osakar Unger 6-0, 6-3 playing No. 1 singles and then on Sunday he defeated Eduardo Santos, the No. 46-ranked singles player in Division II 6-2, 6-2. He teamed with Blake Hunter at No. 1 doubles beating Rockhursts Oskar Unger and Joe Ibarra 8-3. On Sunday, he and Hunter combined to beat Eduardo Santos and Jose Enrique Coiras 8-4. The singles wins gave him 19 on the season in his freshman season as an Ichabod. The 5-10 freshman is a native of Samborondon, Guayas, Ecuador where he competed at Unidad Educativa Javier.

MIAA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week
Molly Worden, Northeastern State
Molly Worden went 4-0 this past week and picked up a pair of 6-0, 6-0 singles victories to help Northeastern State secure the outright 2016 MIAA Regular Season Championship. Worden also earned two doubles triumphs at the No. 1 doubles position as NSU took down Washburn and Emporia State. She has now won 10-straight singles matches, all in straight sets, and she has been a big part of the RiverHawks current 12-match win streak. The 5-8 sophomore is a native of Fishbourne, Chichester, England whe she competed at Bishop Luffa School.
